Any Alabama cities that are rebuilding downtown?
I am seeking a town (Mobile, Huntsville, wherever) that is currently trying to refurbish their downtown area again. Maybe it became old, but they are trying to pump it up. Anyone know a place like that in Alabama?

What are you looking for condos or apts? Mobile is an old city that dates back to the
1700s.
Mobile is a beautiful city, with several options for retirees, depending on what you are looking for in housing.
Somberby is an independent living community.
There are apts downtown that start around $750.00

Mobile's location is just excellent with New Orleans, Biloxi and Destin, Pensacola and Panama City just a short few hours away; HOWEVER, what stops me is the chance/risk of your entire house being destroyed by a hurricane. Other than that, nothing could stop me from moving there. It's the bomb!
Are they really pushing Mobile for retirement, and how are they doing with that???

Birmingham is undergoing a major renovation with lofts and office buildings. Currently, Birmingham's office space is 94% occupied. With more people living downtown, restaurants, bars, and shops are coming back. I think in about 5 years, downtown Birmingham will prove to be something really special.

Your house wouldn't be destroyed by a hurricane unless you lived on the water and a storm surge took it.

Kevin is right, my sister lives in Summerdale maybe 20 minutes to the gulf. I think the only damage she has ever had was a tree limb fell on her roof, but she had no damage. My mother lived in a trailer right behind my sister's house and her trailer had no damage either during Ivan or Katrina. My mother also lived in Fairhope, my father in Mobile during Fredrick, and neither had any damage. Trees would be the biggest worry and possibly flying objects breaking windows.
You wouldn't want to live in a low lying area near the water during a hurricane.. but there are plenty of places that are higher ground.
