Default Winter weather in NE Alabama

Am in central Oklahoma and today having blowing snow with temps in 20's. Planning a visit to the Ft Payne area in early May as thinking of relocating to that area, possibly next year. Got to wondering what winters are like in NE Alabama or in any Northern section of Alabama near the Tennessee border. We experience what I consider crazy weather here when the temps go from the 60's early this week to the 20's today. Does the weather there change that much in Alabama and is it windy there too? Thought I heard on news this am maybe ice in Alabama soon. Does that happen very often? As you may know, we have severe ice storms here; absoultely no fun whatsoever! Anyway, would appreciate any feedback re subject. Thanks to all and especially Keeper who I find very helpful!

Yes, AL can have some steep weather swings and some occasional ice. But not much in the way of snow or ice storms.

Sometimes it can be very windy, usually only when storm fronts are coming in. I don't think it compares to the Okie winds, though!

It was a bit nippy at 5:00 this morning, by 6:00 we had 35F. My weather gage is the birdbath. If it is frozen solid I need longjohns to go walking:>)

Having lived in OKC, it isn't nearly as bad here as it is there summer or winter. We do get some swing in temps during the winter. It was in the 60s for a day or two and then back to normal which is in the 40-50s as highs. The dog's water bowl was frozen for a few days.
Summer's are hot especially in Aug. Last summer was hotter than the year before with a week of 100 temps.

Like Nicole said.. we just don't have the wind except during rain storms.

techFORGeSEVEN -- beware of what you wish for! I am from New England and after more than 60 years of drudging through snow storms, I can't wait to get away from these harsh winters. We visited the Rogersville area last month and I was disappointed to find that the weather was almost as cold as what we left. There was one morning that rivaled our blustery cold New England weather and I saw snow flakes. But, that being said, I think the whole country is experiencing some unusual weather this year. We are returning to the area for the long weekend in a couple of weeks and hope to find milder weather this time.

The AVERAGE high temp in Huntsville for the month of August last year was 98. I hope next year is better, because 106 deg and me don't mix very well. Our old house struggled to keep it below 80 when it was that hot as well. I need to insulate more before next summer.

We've had a wierd winter. It has been bitter cold (teens and twenties) for stretches, but it has also been very mild at times. We've had some much needed rain the last few days. The winters do swing in temperature quite a bit, but this winter seems to be a little more haphazard.

North Alabama is a place of temp swings during the winter. Just when you think it is going to be cold, it warms up. May get up to 70 degrees tomorrow before settling back into the 50s for the rest of the week. I have been in Madison for 3 years and cold is the exception and not the rule. Seeing a snow flurry is the exception and not the rule. I have had heavier frosts than snowfall since I have been here. And yes it get hot in the summer. That is why I leave my air conditioned house in my air conditioned car to go to work in an air conditioned building.

I grew up in what is now South Memphis without air conditioning and it is livable without air conditioning even though I wouldn't want to go through it.

It gets cold here when we receive a blue norther for a few days but mild weather returns in the winter and finally, it is raining. Let it rain, let it rain. More tomorrow night and it is welcome.

If you want to get away from the cold in the winter you can do a lot worse than here. If you want to get away from the heat in the summer, there are better places.

But back to the reference to Ft. Payne, it can get a little colder, a little more snow and not quite so hot in the summer. It will have its days but it still has a nice winter climate.
