Just curious -- why would you be moving there if you don't know anything about the area, don't have a job, and don't have any prospects for a place to live???

I was born and raised in Florence, AL and lived there up until 2 years ago. I live just outside of Nashville now. My parents and a lot of my friends still live there, so I still visit a lot. Florence is beautiful and I love the local music scene! The job market is VERY lacking, though. That's why a lot of the younger adult generation (like myself) have left the area. It's also why the school system has had to condense the schools and close a couple of them in recent years. It's a city with a lot of potential, but a small-town mentality (Mayberry). I do believe there are some good jobs working with the city government. You might also find something available working for the University of North Alabama. As far as affordable housing, the only income-based housing I know of is Courtview Towers downtown. They're so-so apartments. However, the cost of renting any apartment there is so cheap, you shouldn't have a problem. I hope I've helped and that you enjoy it there!

LOL. Helping out (promoting) a ministry in Alabama is preaching to the choir. My guess is that you were assigned there, and don't have a choice. You'll find that those who choose religion have already entrenched themselves in a church, and 99% of the other heathens have absolutely no interest in going that route. Look at the experience as a personal growth one and try not to get discouraged.

Yes I am definatley assigned there and dont have a choice..I have been putting off this move for almost 3 years now!!!! out of fear and guilt of leaving my mother and brother (they are not sick or anything) Just the feeling of what will they do without me? but I have to do what I have to do.. I am 27 and past time for me to go there.. I am really trying not to get discouraged.. I am planning on making the move come income tax time around march!! I am soo excited I need to find a good furniture store that will let me get things on credit and good incomoe based apartments and a good job.. Thanks for the enocuragement Harry, and SuzieQ :-)

I worked in Florence Alabama and really enjoyed the city. I lived in Lexington Alabama on the Tennesse line. Lexington is a small town and full of God loving people. The school system is great! I have relocated to the South and wish I still lived there.

I lived in Spruce Pine for 3 years, 2003-2006, which is 5 miles south of Russellville a very nice small town. Russellville is about 20 miles south of the Shoals and 30 miles south of Florence. Spruce Pine is 20 miles north of Hamilton, also a very nice small town. Russelville does have subsidized housing, a good hospital and would you believe a Super WalMart. What more could you want? It is a very "bible belt" town and you would fit right in with the good people there. Most are Baptist. The NW AL area is considered the least expensive part of the state, very rural and agricultural. Hamilton is pretty well isolated from the NW corridor and is inward looking and what I would call self contained. Factory work and mobile home manufacturing is what sustains the local economy along with poultry breeding. Hope this helps.

My forefathers settled in this neck of the woods. I wish I could get assigned there by someone! I love the area so much, I just may retire there. Six years and counting.
