I'm "from" Alabama and lived there many years. Lived in the Panhandle now for the last 11 years. I'm SORRY but taxes and cost of living are MUCH HIGHER in Florida than Alabama. Our insurance bill DOUBLED from $1000 per year to $2000 this year and our coverage is "reduced". NEVER made a claim on insurance in my LIFE.
Our property taxes went from $2500 to $4200 without anybody even SCREAMING except me!
Live outside the city limits in Dothan. It has been rated as one of the 10 best cities (all things considered) in America.
UAB is not "that far" and has the premier heart care center in the "world" for that matter. I had open heart in January of this year to replace the Mitral valve. They didn't use ARTIFICIAL, but fashioned a new one from material on the underside of the heart, ergo no ongoing blood thinners and I'm literally better than new. Dothan also has a premier medical center there that probably isn't more that 10 years old.

how about some prices on the houses?
I am thinking of moving to that area from SW Fla. as well, so if I had some prices for a Newer 3Bed/2Bath home for starters, I can have a better feeling.

We are looking for some nice new neighbors....
We are from SWFL........ where are you?
We bought a new 3BR - 2BT home, the one they are building next to us is same but 1650 SQ FT and from what I can get out of them it should go for $150k in that area not useing a realtor.
We are in the country and it is a bit better than in the city, we are also in Geneva county and found the property taxes were also cheaper.
We are also 10 mile from the circle of Dothan, maybe 7 mile from the FL/AL line, 4 mile to a great little place to eat, we got cows 1/2 mile to the east of us and Buffalo 1/2 mile to the west and maybe 8 people in between, and three will be moving by the end of the year.

What did your Homeowners insurance run there in Alabama? Taxes for the year?

Not sure of exact rates as of yet since it is all new, all I can say is that the two combined should not be more than what I was paying for Flood Ins down there.
When we were up here in June I had to find Homeowners coverage and really did not have the time to shop around, I will do that when it comes time to renew, property taxes were even lower here in Geneva county than Huston county.

since you had to pay in advance, is it possible for you to look at your policy and share the general price range with us?

Just a rough but Homeowners ins. was $435 - this is slighty less than a third of what I was paying.
No Flood Ins. - another $625.00 a year savings
Taxes - $300.00 again 1/4 the taxes I was paying
People from Naples were selling out and moving to PG - but PG is really starting to get real expensive.
We made trip back home to PG a couple weeks ago, to visit friends and party, their are so many homes for sale and so much construction going on that is makes you wonder, the market is flooded.
Finding a place here will not be hard but selling your place their will be, unless you get lucky.

YEs, for sure, I may have to offer my place for dirt cheap just to get out of Naples.
I'll still make a bundle of money since I bought in 99 before the big runups.
I used to own some lots over in Harbour Heights area of PG, sold them a few years ago.
That place is dead.\
The lot I sold on De soto blvd now has taxes of 848.00 a year. Glad I sold

We lost about 25k on our place, it was off the market for two days and we had an offer - go figure.
If you would like to continue these conversations off the board you can email me direct at homey@veriqikdsl.com - then we wont clutter up this board.
You will find that life is entirley different up here compaired to SWFL, we have been working hard on the outside trying to get some things done and will soon just chill and start looking to find some new friends and things to do.
The house next door is coming along, they put up the roof trusses today, going to be a pretty big house, someone going to get a good deal I am sure.
And yeah Harbour Heights is building I think, and a lot of people are still looking to live in Naples - Ft Myers was bad enough and their is no way I would live in the area of Bonita Springs & Naples, traffic is just to much to bear on a daily basis, snowbirds will be coming back and it will onlu get worse
