tuxedocat, I'm sure there is swampland that people will sell for a song. Are you planning to move to the country in AL or AK or WY? What do you consider too expensive? How much land do you want? What is the proposed use of the land? Are utilities (or lack of) an issue? Do you want flatland or hills or lakeshore or mountainous land? Do you need water? Can the land be restricted? What kind of access is acceptable? What about taxes? Is a subdivision OK?

a subdivision is not ok. It has to be in AL. Prefer utilities, but doesn't have to be. Within a couple of hours of Bham would be preferred. Enough acreage so that it would be very quiet and secluded but passable roads to get to it. Prefer no restrictions or potential zoning questions. Other than that, I just don't know until I see it. As far as mountains or lakeshore or mountainous land, the criteria is that it be pretty. Don't really know much more than that. Thanks much

Drive down to Talladega and head south and east, you'll find a fair amount of wild land between there and the Georgia border. We are about two hours from B'ham up near the Tennessee border, so northwest AL is also not out of your zone. You'll find that undeveloped or farm land goes for less money per acre, but you have to buy more acres in a package. At some of the auctions, you can still find $2K /acre land, but you need to be prepared to buy forty of them or more, and hope that the final sale of the auction doesn't have a buyer that buys up the whole shebang.
Northeast of B'ham is too built up and expensive, southwest of B'ham just never interested me that much, but you might find something there.

I’ve been looking for a place here in Alabama also, but the real-estate people don’t want to mess with you if they can’t make that high commission
All I want is a few acres to build a retirement cabin, grow some grub, raise a few Chickens, and keep my boat tied to the shore and catch a few Catfish. I’m still looking after a full year? Not wanting to but, I guess I’ll have to move to another state

Why not try realtor.com? On that site, I have seen several parcels for sale in NW Alabama, for as little as $1200/acre. Realtors generally get 10% commission on land, and I seriously doubt any of them will turn down a sale of acreage, especially right now.

I agree that SOME Reators do feel that way, but not all.

Jsherman9901 & Keeper,
Perhaps you are right I may have to redefine my search location and criteria.
I’m sick of Huntsville’s rise in becoming another New York City.
]Back again,
]Thank you for your time and comment. I’ll begin looking again sometime early fall when the CD’s mature again

I think you're going to have to look in rural counties. Land here where I live in Escambia County is not terribly expensive, but I can go next door to Baldwin County and the price is double what it is here for the same type of land.
