The "feel" of Alabama can be difficult to describe to outsiders, but I think that signs can reflect the character of an area enough to give an inkling of what the people are like. The changeable letter boards of church signs can sometimes have stunning, if fleeting, messages, and handmade signs or old business signs can also be a treat. If you have images of interesting or funny Alabama signs, why not upload them to this thread?
I'll start. This sign brought a flood of thoughts to my mind. My first was wonderment at the juxtaposition of the worldly and the spiritual, then I got to wondering if it was the official church of Pepsi, then wondered if I looked around, would I find a church of Coke, or a church of Sundrop, or a church of Dr Pepper? Then I began thinking about how stadiums are renamed for corporate sponsors, and how churches might soon have such corporate sponsors, rather than personal sponsors who purchase a pew, or have a part of a place named in their honor. A few years ago, I would have thought that profaning of a church to be a stretch. Now, and after seeing this sign, I'm not so sure. In any event, the sign does display the creative integration of church and everyday life in this area of the state. I found it almost as amusing as the "What would Jesus Do?" graffiti that I once saw on a bridge on the interstate. Uhhh, just a guess, but I think Jesus would probably not be tagging with a can of spray paint. But again, it was a telling sign of at least one person's attitudes and priorities. ![]() How about it, got any funny or interesting signs to share? |

I'm sure that was probably done by kids trying to be funny.

I don't have a photo, but there's the famous sign north of Prattville on I-65 that says "Go To Church Or The Devil Will Get You."

"Go to church..."
Didn't Patsy Riley (the governor's wife) get him to take the sign down? I was surprised to see it still up when we drove by a few weeks ago. |
