Sorry, Tourian. I didn't mean to dis' your response. I do appreciate it. But since you mentioned you had only been there once, but even you suggested leaving an extra 45 minutes, and Southlander's comment seemed to back that up with the added statement that it *could be* even worse and was specifically addressing the time frame I mentioned. Even an extra 45 minutes was pushing it to the point where it might make sense to just drive straight to Birmingham on Friday even if it means getting there at midnight. Our business in Bham on Saturday morning is not something that will wait for us if we're late.

Ok, so i understood you were headed to Huntsville. Now it's business in Bham on Saturday?

Leave Friday and stay in Bham.

No worries.

Then I wouldn't leave it up to chance. Grab a Monster tallboy and push on through to the Ham.

Well Jenn, I did misunderstand that you are coming FROM Atlanta going TO the " 'Ham," and that you'll be travelling Saturday, not the BIG raceday, Sunday.

But I stand by my advice, especially since you will be travelling west to east. Traffic will probably be backed up to Heflin...heck maybe even the Georgia/Alabama border. You could always head out from Atlanta at about 6 a.m., which would put you in the Talladega area about 8 a.m or so. Whoops, grandstands open at 8 a.m.
So yes - get there Saturday night (if you can find a hotel room) late.
That will be the other problem - a hotel room in Birmingham on Friday night of Talladega weekend.

Yes, I-20 is wider, but since 1973-4, the grandstands have also gotten wider, and bigger. Plus now there's a huge campground which it didn't have back then. LOTS more people trying to get into that one spot in a small town.

That's fine but as I said it's not like everybody goes there at the same time. It is a whole weekend and she just clarified that shes going on Saturday which isn't the day of the big race. I think she'd be fine with minimal delay but since this sounds like a crucial appointment that can't be missed or be late for or rescheduled might as well remove all doubt and stress and push on through Friday night.

Yes, thanks all. We've booked our hotel room in Birmingham. A little annoying for a few reasons, but just can't risk delays. Besides, now we'll get to sleep in and enjoy a leisurely morning.
