Langford’s Wheel of Misfortune
Langford’s Wheel of Misfortune
SEC transcript reveals mayor’s financial troubles
By: Kyle Whitmire
In December, Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford stood before a crowd of about three hundred people at the Boutwell Auditorium to pitch his 1 percent increase in sales taxes.
“If a penny is going to break you, you’re already broke anyway, so don’t worry about it,” Langford told the crowd.

Excellent article, thanks for posting. Too much for me to comment, too little time. I'll just make this quick -

Attorneys for Blount and Langford have indicated that they know a parallel criminal investigation is underway.

The sooner, the better. The SEC can bust their chops all day with civil lawsuits - I'd love nothing more than to see this crook get thrown behind bars where he belongs. Maybe his cellmate will be former Alabama governor Don Siegelman - seriously, Alabama, and especially Birmingham, needs to clean up the corruption. Kincaid may have been a do-nothing mayor but at least he was scandal-free. Why didn't y'all elect that guy who went to Yale? I forget his name. I can't believe the city of Birmingham fell hook, line, and sinker for Langford, a man who everybody in town knows is crooked as hell. He's been doing this same sh*t for 20 or 30 years now. It's nothing new to see Langford in court. Just a damn crook, plain and simple. I don't know what the city of Birmingham's process or procedure for removing elected officials is, but I hope Langford is tried and convicted, and promptly removed from office. Birmingham deserves so much better and has all of the potential in the world, but for all of Langford's rhetoric about moving the city forward, he's doing nothing but pushing it back. Birmingham had managed to build an excellent credit rating and sound fiscal policy under the Kincaid administration - once I got the news up here in Chicago from back home that Langford had been elected as the mayor I knew that would go down the drain. Langford is a taxpayer's dollar's worst enemy, he will spend your money as if his life depended on it.

By preaching. Not that he's an actual pastor of a church or religious leader or anything, but he's quick to pull a little "street sermon" as I like to call it, out of his ass whenever he's in front of a crowd, and people in this city fall for it hook, line, and sinker. Too bad his actions don't match his holier-than-thou rhetoric.

Well, I think the SEC is about to come down on Langford (and the other former JeffCo commissioners) like the proverbial ton o'bricks.

I agree with your post completely. He's going down just like all the rest. I know it, the same way I know it about the legislators who have been involved in the two year college system. That's what you get when you know a bunch of lawyers.....they talk a lot.
Now why didn't "the guy who went to Yale" (Chris Cooper) get elected? The Langford-Arrington political regime promoted him as the "white candidate" even though he is black. There was a great cartoon in the Birmingham News about this - about two weeks before the election.
If you check the results from the election, the districts in Birmingham that are predominently white voted heavily for Cooper. Those predominently black voted for Langford. I am not making any conclusions about this, but pointing out the facts.
Unfortunately it is the same reason that Richard Scrushy got exonerated in his Criminal Trial. Effective pandering. Scrushy joins a black church for a year before his trial and makes tremendous financial contributions to it. Gets a heavily black jury and walks.
Check it out. It's all true and disgusting.
Langford is going down.
So will we have another election where Chris Cooper gets his chance to become mayor?
Nope sorry. Carole Smitherman will ascend to the throne.
More of the same.
Sorry.............

Found it:

A charity Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford created more than seven years ago to give every child a computer faces scrutiny from a donor and federal prosecutors over its use of more than $1 million in taxpayer money, including payments on personal credit card bills, expenses for "elaborate" trips and checks written to a star of gay-porn films.

Documents filed in the Jefferson County lawsuit against Katopodis show nonprofit programs managing Langford's first computer charity paid:
$30,000 to Marc Anthony Donais, also known as Ryan Idol, a star in gay adult films.
