Well first of all I want to say that those of you that dont think theres any racism in alabama are wrong, and while im not proud of it thats just the way it is. Now here are some examples from cullman county and sorrounding counties. First, take a look at the black population in this part of alabama most counties are 95 percent white, with some counties 98 to 99 percent white. Now folks i hate to say it but it didnt get that way by accedent. Second i personally know of an incedent that happened on smith lake about 6 years ago, where a mixed race man from mississippi was not alowed to fish in a bass turnament. Now I no some of you will say that cant be true and that smith lake aint like that but it is most definintly true. Also i dont want yall to think that this person was chased off by an angry mob or something like that because he wasent, he was told that the tornament was full and many of us that fish these tornaments know that they are never full. Third and most emportantly if you ask most people in the area i think that they would say that they perfer the company of there own race, some might say it in a hateful way with bad language and racial slurrs and some might say it in a nice way, but it all means the same thing now dont it.

Also i want to sound like im saying the people of this part of alabama are bad people, because there not. I truely belive that most people that are kinda racist dont even know that they are. When theres not alot of change to an area, alot of what people know come from there parents and so on, and racism is one of those things that gets passed down from geration to generation easilly.

ljse - yet a majority of voters in 95 percent white cullman county they went and elected them a black man to represent them in montgomery i wonder why they would do that if they was racist. Maybe he don't fish.

I was born in Chicago, and have also lived in Alabama (for most of my life, many different parts including Birmingham, Florence and small towns along the way), Florida and Atlanta (where I live now). Alabamians are the most freedom loving people I know. They know and understand US history, and the love the constitution. They understand that in our United States people are free to be racist and free to say how stupid racists are. And this is the way it should be. Atlanta, however, is hailed as one of the most liberal cities in the south, and yet they make a law against being homless and charge sky high property taxes to where it is clear only the rich are welcome. It just goes to show that "racist" means a whole lot more than "So-and-so feels uncomfortable in the room with a person of another color." I would argue that Alabama is much less rasict than places like Atlanta and Chicago whose taxes squelch opportunity and make becoming self-sufficient next to impossible. You can't just live in the Atlanta area, you have to report, and file, and pay or you'll be fined or imprissoned. I miss Bama!

Wow.... it's interesting to read all of those posts. I'll be moving to Mobile soon and it's this type of thing that scares me... I guess I'm just scared that I wont fit in. I've been to the area and everyone is always nice but living there can be different. I will certainly remember not to talk incessantly about my hometown and how it's "better", everyone loves their hometown but you have to learn how to say when.

I have known from the get-go that I need to keep mum about my hometown of San Diego when I get to Alabama next spring. There are a lot of places that don't care for people from California.
Granted, a lot of people from here are egotistical like you wouldn't believe, and don't even get me started on the extremely over inflated sense of entitlement, but we're not all like that. Promise!
I'll be a good little Bama transplant.

Uh.... It's not just Alabama... Almost ALL rural counties in the U.S. are 80+ percent white. It's just a fact of life. It's related to a thing called White Flight when alot of minority people moved into the cities white people responded by moving to the suburbs and the sticks.
Tennessee has 95 counties and without looking them up I can guarantee you that better then 80 counties are 80% white or higher.

TNRyan23 - since TN is about 14% black, it makes sense that most counties would be 80% white or higher.

Oh, you can talk about San Diego, especially since you're moving to Birmingham. Just don't talk about it nonstop. No, Birmingham doesn't have the cultural scene of San Diego or the sports, etc. etc. etc. But it's a pretty great town. And constantly and wistfully saying what you miss about your old city basic reflects on the city where you currently live.
