Just curious................what does church have to do with liberalism? If you're Christian, you can't possibly be considered liberal IMO...........moderate at best. But I guess that just goes to show you how left-of-center I am.

BTW, the Southside of Birmingham is your best bet for finding liberals in Alabama. As mentioned earlier, that part of town did elect the first openly gay member of the Alabama state legislature a few months ago in November.........lots of gays in Crestwood, Five Points South, etc. I used to work as a server/bartender in restaurants in both Birmingham and Huntsville and it wasn't uncommon to see openly gay couples or even a tranny or two (in Birmingham more so than Huntsville).

Don't get me started on PETA... grrr...

But congrats to Uno. Unfortunately for the breed, after all those cute aroooos, unsuspecting people will be lining up to purchase the latest fad breed. At least most Southerners should know better.

Church does not mean Christian.

Unitarians are Unitarians- totally separate from Christianity. Read up on them and you'll understand why a UU church is a sign of liberals.

Far-Left are people such as Joseph Stalin, Hugo Chavez, etc. Ultimately, far-Left is Communism, while far-right is Fascist.

Most Christians are actually Centrist/Moderates. Conservative is more of economic freedom, with more social restraint, whilst Liberal is more government control of economics (Socialism usually) with more social freedom. Libertarianism's extreme is Anarchy (no government). A Statist's extreme is Totalitarianism.

Most Americans are probably Centrist/Moderate as opposed to being Liberal or Conservative (despite what they may or may not claim to be).

There are Liberals in Alabama, however the vast majority (like 90%) are not native to the state.

I don't quite understand why someone who was a Democrat in say...Michigan, then moved to Alabama would hold the same political views if the place they came from (Michigan in this example) was no longer fit to live, seems a bit counterproductive to me.

The best combination is probably Social Liberalism with Economic Conservatism.

Nazis/fascists weren't really "left" or "right"... they combined some left-of-center economic policies (as the one guy described, social security, etc.) with the rightest of the right wing social philosophies (hyper-nationalism, white supremacy, exaltation of the executive branch, extreme overuse of the death penalty, millitary aggression, maintaining "traditional values," they were cultural reactionaries, etc.) But the Nazis are regarded as a blight on humaninty because of the second set of attributes, not the first.

Isn't that pretty much impossible though? Liberal social programs cost money.

You are absolutely right, Liberal Social programs are very expensive (which is why countries with it have tax rates up to 50%). Of course, that would never be accepted in the US. The idea is to have a free market and charge the corporations in order to pay for public services such as healthcare, social security, etc.

Frankie117 - while I disagree that far-right is fascist (although that's the European understanding, but consider that Mussolini was looking for the "third way" between socialism and capitalism - or a more centrist ideology and that bit about social liberalism being best, your comment here is right on:

If this post was on the Montana, Idaho, or Utah board it wouldn't have gone past the first page, Jeez ! Doesn't this post really belong on the Religion or politics board,
Screw left or right and just go fishing or play with your kids, dogs or what have you !
I always wonder why liberals have to seek out other liberals ! Why cant they just be regular people like the rest of us ? !

Change the "white supremacy" to supremacy of the dominant people (Russian, Han, farmers, etc) and change "traditional values" to "traditional Marxist values" and you have communism. You really can't tell the two apart, Fascism and Communism. Large numbers of innocent people die in both regime types.

Because when you get down to it, diversity doesn't really mean them accepting the political beliefs of other people, but you accepting theirs.
