Are there any condo conversions of old commercial buildings in either the Mobile area or Dothan that are being rehabbed into lofts or condos? For example, in Chicago there are many old buildings that have been converted over to condos or lofts (a pencil factory, a candy factory, many printing company buildings downtown, etc.).
Some cities are just now starting to do this, but others have not caught on yet.

Oh yeah !! mainly downtown there are several downtown building such as the Mattress Factory Lofts,St Emanuel street Lofts,Buick Building,Karess building, Old Gayfers building Lofts,Carriege Building Lofts ,etc. Several buildings in the entertainment district are lofts up stairs but is a cafe, bank ,theater,or retail downstairs. The buildings in the entertainment district date back from the early 1800`s . Several of the downtown lofts have 9 - 15 foot ceilings with some original and new hard wood floors, some with the original brick as well, with Italinate,French,or Spanish exterior that are original from the early 1800`s.

My wife and I were walking around downtown last night. It amazes me at how many buildings are being fixed up right now.

I have loved Mobile ever(y) ??? since I began going there in 1975. and back then, the "overwhelming" population of individuals, were those UNDER the age of 25, so it was considered a "Young-At-Heart" City, and I did my share of partying there! We frequented Winchell's, Dr. Wong's (Chinese Restaurant - and at the time - a DISCO - with a lighted floor) on Airport Blvd...not too far from the Mall, and a very "wonderful" formal dinner I took all my (younger) High School Graduate friends (from Greystone & Theodore HS) at the Beinville Club, atop the First National Bank Building...and followed it up...going to Dauphin Island...just to be "stupid kids." It was great!
Mobile...to me...(and I hope it's still the same) has all the charm of a small city...including age...and I just wish I could afford a really nice highrise condo there, because the people are so SUPER...It's laid back. I've lived in another similar (in size) City, in Trenton, NJ; same "small town" atmosphere; same SUPER people...GREAT FOOD! People that like larger cities...CAN HAVE THEM!! Give me a small city with good food, NEIGHBORS - WHO ARE NEIGHBORS - and look out after each other...and a nearby place to drop a hook in the water and try and out-guess an animal that lives every day...to play this game....and what else do you need?
