Positives for Tuscaloosa : Largest and most highly rated university in the state, largest automotive sector employment of any county in the state, former state capital, most popular and successful sports team in the state, nice rivers and lakes in town, etc

Positives for Auburn : Tradition of throwing toilet paper in trees, good university programs in pharmacy and agriculture and the largest engineering program in the state.

I'm not trying to be "mean," but where does this "much nicer" bit come in ?

New retail and job growth in Auburn is much better than that in Tuscaloosa. Auburn is literally exploding with growth. It has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state. Overall, it is just a nicer place.

Well, Tuscaloosa County's at 4.1% as of October 2008, while Lee County is at 4.5% : Alabama LAUS

Both are great numbers, but you make it sound like Auburn is some juggernaut while Tuscaloosa is standing still.
Guess which municipality added more population over the last three years, according to official census estimates ?
