Relo to N Alabama (Cullman)
We are possibly relocating to the Cullman area from mid TN. Could someone please give me info on the area.... Best area to live, schools (we have one entering 9th gr), etc.. We will probably rent for a while until settled. I haven't had much luck finding any posts on this area. Thanks.

As far as I know, we have no one here from Cullman! I know Cullman High School is pretty good...don't know anything about the county schools. It's a very pretty area, and is convenient to Birmingham to the south and Huntsville to the north - about an hour from both - and close to Smith Lake and Bankhead Forest for recreational activities. Farming is still an important activity in this area.
For quiet, peaceful living, Cullman can't be beat!

Thanks for the feedback, Southlander. Sounds like a nice place. We really don't want hustle and bustle anyhow. We have been in middle TN all our lives and have no idea what to expect. Will be there Friday to look around. Wish me luck!

I know one person here that lives close to Cullman . I live about 20 miles from Cullman and have been through there on my way to the I65. It has a nice little downtown and the area around the interstate is busy and has a hospital and stores.

I lived in Cullman (went to Cullman High School, graduated in 85) for about four years. It's not a bad town, but you are NOT going to run into what people on these boards call "progressive" thinking. People in Cullman like things traditional, usually. Keeper is right, there is a fairly charming downtown and historical district. Cullman does have its selling points.
CHS is supposed to be pretty good; my assessment of it is based on my long-ago time there, and is hardly objective, so I can't advise you there personally. I DO know from personal experience, and from people who work there and nearby, that Cullman Regional Medical Center is NOT somewhere you want to go, for any reason, under any circumstances. The level of care is not even up to Alabama standards, which are hardly the most stringent in the nation. Seriously, if you live in the Cullman area and need any kind of medical care, it's worth your time and money and gas to go to Huntsville or Birmingham. If I were seriously injured in Cullman, I'd crawl to UAB if I had to.

If you live in TN, your not too far away to drive down and check out Cullman. There are very nice places to live and not so nice places. You have to drive through the areas and check them out for yourself. I don't know much about the schools because I don't live right in Cullman. I have a few friends who are teachers at the elementary school and they have never said anything bad about the high school.
Cullman has a Lowe's, Kmart, Walmart, Big Lots, Rite Aid, CVS, Book stores, movie theater, video rental places, pizza places, several car dealerships. Not too many restaurants, but there are a few. Huntsivlle is only a 45 minute drive and they have some better restaurants and shopping malls. Cullman does not have a mall, but they do have a small JCPenney, Belk and a Goodies. The historic part of Cullman is nice with a bunch of little unique shops. You have your pick of churches here if you are a churchgoer. They have many different denominations. There is a nice park with a walking trail around the small lake, a playground, and paddle boating at Sportman's Lake Park right in the Cullman city limits. Hurricane park is located on 31 between Cullman and Falkville and has a mountain biking trail and a hiking trail. They also have rock climbing on the weekends for kids. Cullman also has Smith Lake, I've never been there, but I'm sure someone else on here can fill you in on it.
OK, that's all I can think of right now. Any specific questions, please ask!!

Cullman is also known for Ave Maria Grotto, which is essentially Barbie Jerusalem. It's cute, though. I hated being a teenager there, but now that I'm grown with small kids, I wouldn't mind living there if it weren't for the horrendously bad medical care.
