State Senator E.B. McClain (D-Midfield) allegedly received kickbacks from State money granted to a non-profit group, supposedly founded to provide computer-based tutoring program for the children.

State Sen. E.B. McClain and the Rev. Sam Pettagrue have been charged with first-degree theft of state money, authorities announced Friday... the charges against McClain, 67, and Pettagrue, 65, involve a $65,000 grant in 2002 from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to the Community Resource Center, a nonprofit founded by Pettagrue...

McClain, a Midfield Democrat, is immune to arrest while the Alabama Legislature is in session and is expected to surrender when the session ends...

The Birmingham News reported Sunday that McClain received at least $55,500 from special legislative grants sent to Pettagrue's Birmingham nonprofit from 2001 to 2003, at times getting paid directly from the state grants that he requested for the group...

Yeah, but just look at all the ones under the microscope from the Feds for kickbacks, bribery, and the like, related to the two-year college system.

Well, I met one of the new Federal prosecutors. He was moving here from Atlanta. I asked him if he would be busy, to which he smiled, "Oh, there's enough work in Birmingham to keep us busy until retirement."
