Birmingham has had 4.43" since the rain started yesterday, and the Weather Channel just showed stranded, mostly submerged cars.

Huntsville has had 3.06" so far, with areal flood warnings, but I've not heard of any specific problems ... yet.

At my house, my rain gauge has around 3.5" since around 2:00 p.m. yesterday. I don't know the exact amount at the moment since the rain gauge I have with an inside display is electronic and it resets at midnight. I've hand 1.11" since midnight.

We drove back from Panama City on Wednesday in clear weather, and the traffic on 65 was terrible. I can only imagine how the trek would be, and is for many, with rain like this, during the holiday season.

Supposed to be more rain Sunday, Monday night, and Wednesday, but it looks like we're through with the worst of it.

We plan on moving to Alabama in the next few years and were looking into cities like Pelham, Calera, Alabaster and then even farther south like Deatville and Millbrook. Unfortunately - it appears that Millbrook is a flood prone area which I want to avoid.

Are there areas south of Birmingham that I should try to stay away from due to being flooded occasionally?

It’s certainly wet and soggy down here around Mobile. I’m going to have to fix ruts in my yard where the UPS driver can’t seem to keep it on the driveway.

Flooding is not a major issue in the Birmingham metro because of the very hilly terrain. It's easy to find homes in locations that would never flood. That's not to say that some places in the area aren't lower and flood prone in some cases, but it should be easy to find a place where this is never an issue. The terrain flattens out a lot when you cross the Alabama River into Montgomery, so there are going to be more flood prone locations in those areas. A little research into those communities would go a long way, as I'm sure it's relatively easy to find places to live there as well with almost no flooding history.
