Hi, folks. My wife and I are moving to Alabama from Atlanta in the coming few months. Does Alabama levy a tax on out-of-state cars that are moved to Alabama? In Georgia, the state will charge you a percent of fair market value to register your car in the state.

Many thanks!

You won’t be taxed for bringing your vehicle to Alabama . You will be pay a ad valorem tax when you register your vehicle. This tax is paid annually when you renew your tag.

Out of curiosity, we tried calling the DMV in Houston County and they were unable to approximate the amount paid as either a percentage or amount. Is anyone willing to give an example? For example, here in AZ, we have a 2016 BMW X3 (used) and out tax portion of registrations was just under $600.

I don't think it will be that much here. We have 3 vehicles ... a 2009 Corvette, 2013 Caddy, and 2015 Subaru and the total for all three is about what your BMW cost in Arizona.

In Alabama I believe vehicles are assessed at 20% of market value for property tax purposes. Taxing jurisdictions then apply their millage rate to that value to determine the tax due. So, in Huntsville, if you own a $10,000 car, it will be assessed as $2,000 for tax purposes. Huntsville residents are subject to a tax rate of 58.5 mils (I think), which converts to a tax rate of 5.85%. So you pay $2,000 multiplied by .0585, or $117, in property taxes on a $10,000 car.

You can search for Alabama tax property tax millages by city and county online. If you call the county courthouse, you need to talk to the tax assessor or tax collector offices—and sometimes they are combined into the same office.
