I don't know about me.. I talk pretty California-like but... my eldest daughter has started pronouncing certain words with REALLY long vowel sounds "thaaaaat" and "baaath". This surprised me because I've met plenty of people who were born in Huntsville that don't at all sound Southern to me, just by virtue of living in Huntsville and having non-Southern parents.

People have told me that it will depend on her teachers as to whether she develops a twang or not. If she has Southern teachers or not. She does have a Southern teacher right now.

I have started teaching my kids to say Sir and Ma'am though. When in Rome...

From Michigan and live in Alabama now. I always called them water bugs in Michigan.

36% Dixie. You are definitely a Yankee. I took this test before and scored slightly different, but not much.

11% Dixie. Wow! You are a Duke of Yankeedom! I still can't get over this "fixin to go" talk, nothing is broken! LOL

LOL, I'm the ONLY person in my town, or state I should say, that doesn't say fixin!!

I wonder if my friends think I'm strange when I say "I'm getting ready to go to the store" or I'm leaving in a few minutes to go to the grocery store"

I LOVE the way everyone talks down here though

It's the g on the end of a word that southerners have a hard time with. If you were to say "I'm gettin' ready" or "I'm leavin' in a few minutes", I probably wouldn't even notice.

I saw a movie about the history of language a couple of times. I believe that leaving off the "g" is Scottish.

Look yall I found this test! It is funny. Yall will like it! Just adding a little excitment to the threads

This was my score: 89% Dixie. Do you still use Confederate money?
The Advanced one: 100% Dixie. Is General Lee your grandfather?!
86% to 97% Dixie. No surprise there. What was surprising was getting some answers rated as "Great Lakes to North Pacific use", or some such. Gaaaah, I done been Yankified.

Zenjenn, I've heard that in other parts of the US, adults DON'T like being addressed as "Sir" or "Ma'am". Here, it's just considered an essential part of courtesy and respect. I'm sure you've noticed this too: We also teach our little ones to use honorifics in front of adult names. My kids call their friends' parents "Miss Kelly", "Mister Scott", etc., to show some deference to their elders. It's never meant to grind the kids down, just to teach them respect and courtesy.
