We are moving back down to the Montgomery (more specifically) Wetumpka this weekend. I Retired out of Maxwell, AFB back in 2003.

Tell us everything you would like to have a new comer know about Wetumpka and the surrounding area.

Thank you

Have you see the show "Home Town" on HGTV? Ben and Erin Napier, along with several other people from HGTV participated in "Home Town Takeover". They chose Wetumpka out of several small towns who wanted a makeover.

Try and watch it if you can.

They have a casino if you like that kind of entertainment. Best not to live too close to it though.

Otherwise - I have no idea. Never been there, but from what I can tell it's a typical small town.

But "seeing" the crater is possible anyway. Are you aware of any LIDAR views from above? LIDAR effectively erases the trees.

I visited with a friend who was a geologist , we couldn’t find anything that we could call a crater. Not familiar with LIDAR. It is interesting.

Former Wetumpka resident and Wetumpka High School alum here. Grew up in Emerald Mountain.

It's turned into quite a nice place to live, but it is an essence, a small town. Growing up, it was boring, but I never took advantage of some of the outdoor recreation they have to offer. You can rent kayaks, paddle boats, and canoes from Coosa River Adventures and go on Lake Jordan. I believe it's only a 30 minute drive to Alex City if you want to go to Lake Martin for the weekend. Since you're a vet (and from Maxwell), I imagine you went to the Maxwell-Gunter Rec area in Dadeville. Fort Toulouse is cool to bring your kids too, but nothing special for adults. Gold Star Park is adjacent to the lake and is a nice hike.

I visited about a month ago to see all the changes HGTV made and downtown actually has turned around for the better. There's actual decent restaurants, as opposed to just Coaches Corner and RJ's Chicken Fingers (which is now closed) 10 years ago. I would check out Coosa Cleaver or Copper House Deli. My wife and I didn't eat at Coaches Corner, so I can't tell you if it's any good. As far as shopping goes, it's still limited. You'll still either have to travel to Montgomery or Prattville. It's not a long drive either to Gunter, so if you feel like going to the BX or the commissary, you'll only have to travel right up 231.

Not sure what you're interested in, but the people are friendly there. I still have friends that live in Emerald Mountain or Titus and I'll travel down to ride dirt bikes and have bomb fires.

All in all, it's a small town. Has some things going for it, but limited in what it has to offer.
