Default Moving to Enterprise Alabama

We are going to be moving to Enterprise, Alabama within the next few months. What is the best elementary school in town? Recommend any rental properties?

Enterprise is where the EPA is cleaning up a factory that use to make brass fittings and as a result had large amounts of lead that was dumped in the soil, I'm only mentioning it because they just started the clean up this year and until then people came to get free dirt for whatever they wanted it for and besides gardens I also know one of the elementary schools took several loads for the kids playground. This factory closed in 1989 so I'm sure someone from enterprise can tell you what school to stay clear of.

Enterprise is a nice town, the job opportunities leave a lot to be desired. Most of the local mills are already at full employment, Dothan is not far from Enterprise though. Hope you like country music.., rumor has it that Enterprise is the next Branson, MO.

As far as renting goes, there are a few apartments and smaller homes on the Northeastern corner of town, closer to Ft. Rucker. You can't really go wrong with picking a neighborhood, I find that the worst parts of town are in the West (in the general vicinity of where all those high school kids were killed last year).

Everything you could want is right there in town, aside from a shopping mall which can be found further East in Dothan. Lots of military families reside in town, and the city is quite diverse.

Enterprise is getting a new shopping center. I hear it will save a lot of people trips to Dothan.

For schools, my daughters school is pretty good, It is Pinedale Elementary. Most of the schools in this town are pretty good, although the district has a heavy interest in testing, and sometimes the kids get overtested, in our opinion. My 2nd grade daughter was in love with school when we moved here, and now she whines and fakes every morning, because she got so tired of the testing. Not as much music or art as I would like, compared to her last school, but otherwise the school is good. If you would like more details you can contact me privately, we are also military just moved to the area about 6 months ago now.
We use Meade and Associates for our rent, they are decent, although we complained about a few things and it has taken them at least 2 months to take care of them, and we need to go in and remind them (The garage door is busted and does not open or close right, so it is letting bugs into the garage, and the stray cats!)
Overall though, we enjoy Enterprise. It is a nice little town, not too much going on, very quiet and safe feeling in most areas. I highly recommend it!
Again, if you have any other more specific questions, you can contact me privately

You will love Enterprise, a small town feeling with all of the convienences of a large town. Dothan is about 20 miles away with a budding theatre life, shops, boutiques and all of the major chain stores.
Fort Rucker is next to Enterprise. Many Good jobs with excellent pay for the area.
Wonderful cutting edge hospitals in Dothan good medical jobs. My husband and I have lived all over the world between the two of us and we retired here and love it.
We are still in our 40's and have lots to do here.

My husband and myself are considering moving to Enterprise or Dotham for retirement next year. We are retired military and would like to be close to a base for commisary and medical. What can we expect regarding home prices for a 3bedroom2bath home and proberty taxes and insurance is it affordable? Do you think this area is desirable for retirees. We currently live in Ohio and want to get away from the cold winters. What are the winters like here and is the summers bearable?

Enterprise is my hometown and is growing by leaps and bounds... I can tell you that parts of downtown are seedy and various apt complexes off of Rucker Blvd are seedy as well... There is an actual mall being built in town with a new cinema complex in it and alot of other new restaurants being built as well.... With the price of gas, Dothan is too far to drive IMO... but Hillcrest and Heron Creek are good elementary schools in Eprise...

I lived in Enterprise for 12 years and then 4 years part time. I'm not a hot weather person so I was glad to get out and my relatives were as well.

In terms of facilities for retired military it has everything one could want. Outside of the base and in the local area there is a plethora of shopping and restaurant options so really the area doesn't lack for much.

Probably the nicest neighborhoods are north of town and that is the area I was glad we lived in for much of the time as it was more insulated from town and quieter.

One laugh we had in the years we lived there was the significant number of families from Ohio and Pennsylvania that moved into our street and after one summer they had put their houses up for sale and were gone back north! That is the one caveat I would warn northerners about is the weather. From April to October you live in air conditioning and unlike the north there is never, never a break with a cold front to push the humidity out. It is just oppressively and sometimes painfully hot. The rest of the year, in the winter it does go below freezing often, but ice is uncommon. There are some nice days Oct-March when it doesn't rain. Also tornadoes and thunderstorms are a frequent occurrence, including a deadly and tragic one last year that destroyed the high school I went to. Hurricanes and tropical storms are also frequent visitors. I would never suggest relocating to Enterprise unless you have spent a few days there in the summertime to see if it works for you.

Crime is also a big problem with a number of tragic murders, hostage takings and robberies including frequent bank robberies having happened over the years. Drugs are also a major problem and the police department stays busy making arrests.
