"Today, Alabama's Black Belt includes some of the poorest counties in the United States. Along with high rates of poverty, the area is typified by declining populations, a primarily agricultural landscape with low-density settlement, high unemployment, poor access to education and medical care, substandard housing and high rates of crime."
The Alabama Blackbelt needs a interstate either connecting from Mobile thru Tuscaloosa up to Florence. But a shorter route would be extend I-85 down through that belt from where it stops in Montgomery.I think the state will not shine until we fix the black belt. The Alabama Blackbelt gets some tourism because of its rich history, but it can be so much more.
