Answers about Footwash - most appreciated!!
Finally, someone -- Granny Sue in this case, has provided some real information. This is the purpose of these forums -- to exchange information -- not just opinions and criticism, but also real facts, real information.
so we know that this event goes back at least 100 years. It is a loosely organized event and that it's held every year out in the country. Apparently based on the tradition, the event is not well policed and at times it can get a little too frisky with the drinking and sex...but that is not the entire event. This year's Footwash is coming up soon. I hope smeone goes and gives a thorough report (maybe even with pictures) so we can all learn more facts about the annual Footwash. Thanks again to Granny Sue!!

The Footwash festival is a tradition that began in the rural county in the late 1800s. According to research by University of Alabama students studying black culture, the festival was started by the Fairhope Benevolent Society, which was formed in Faunsdale in 1888 to improve conditions for burying the dead.
Life insurance wasn’t widely available to blacks, and burial costs could wipe out a family’s assets. Members paid 10 cents a month and the money was used to purchase caskets, aid the sick and pay for burials.
Money left at the end of the year was used to finance the annual Footwash festival, held around the fourth Sunday in September. The meetings included sermons from ministers and were held in a one-room building, according to a UA Web site.
No actual foot washings went on at these gatherings. The event was called Footwash because once participants returned from the rural area, they had to wash their feet.

I am 59 and I have been attending the Footwash for years. if you like wonderful ethnic jewelry, this is the place. the food is off-the-chain, I had my first fried turkey sandwich there and please try the Chicago Bear Burgers (its not really bear meat) they are huge, then there's the whole hog roasting and they just cut off a huge piece and slap it on a sandwich (I know not healthy) but if you go you need to enjoy the offerings. of course there are other things going on, that I don't approve of but you don't have to go in those areas.

I guess the extra law enforcement helped.
I went this year again and there didn't seem to be any problems.
