Having been brought up in NY and having also lived in New England, there definitley is such as thing as a NY (and New England) redneck. I do think some parts of the south have it down pretty good, but the term isn't reserved just for southerners.

I'm from the South and I have always considered the term "redneck" more descriptive of a mindset than a physical characteristic. I'm enjoying the discussion of the term.

This is just my opinion, but, I think 'Northern Rednecks' are Southern Redneck wannabes ! . I think the genuine Article can only be found in the South and i think the Dukes of Hazard would agree ..lol... I agree with the other Poster that it also entails a definitive mindset in addition to physical appearance and behaviour . Like the Dukes of Hazard, im sure alot of Southern Rednecks are just good ol' boys who are into the Redneck agenda and see it as a fun time. So long as they dont go above The Law, I think they have that perogative to practice Redneckism .

Exactly. Their apparel will range from wife-beaters to flannel shirts; raggedy old denim shorts to chinos; flip-flops to broggans; worn-out John Deere cap to huge stetson with a rattle-snake rattle hanging off the back. Their vehicles will vary from a 62 Falcon to 08 F-250 (which will only be driven as long as it takes the repo-man to catch up with them.) The one constant will be their total lack of industriousness.

Don't confuse them with people who superficially appear to be the same but have a vastly different outlook on life.

I thought that rednecks were only in the South. That's what I thought according to newspapers and movies. I ventured all over this country and realized that the redneck attitude and lifestyle is not confined to the southeastern corner of the nation. Some of the biggest rednecks I've met have come from outside of the South.

Oh yeah, good ole boys and rednecks are not the same.

Hell, rednecks exist in some parts of the north, too. I've seen confederate flags and trucks with bumper stickers that read things like "Redneck" in the northeast.

Well, if you wish to drag politics into the discussion, then yes, just as there are Traditional Liberal Rednecks, too. How do you think George Wallace got elected in 1982?

I had watched a doc on the History Channel regarding coal miners and the the possible origin of the term "red neck". During the West Virginia Coal Miners March on Blair Mountain, coal miners wore red bandanas around their necks to identify themselves seeking the opportunity to unionize. Another thought is that the term derives from such individuals having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the sun over the course of their lifetime. The effect of decades of direct sunlight on the exposed skin of the back of the neck reddens fair skin. Some historians claim that the term redneck originated in 17th century Virginia,fair-skinned were sunburnt while tending plantation crops. I grabbed some info Wiki.
