Here's a good example of redneck pride, and by the way, Gretchen Wilson is from Illinois.

YouTube - Gretchen Wilson - Redneck Woman
It reminds me of the country song from the 1980's : Gimme a , gimme a, gimme a , Redneck Girl ....

Hey, if someone wants to be a Redneck, more power to em ; just so long as they pay thier taxes , respect others and their property, and stay within the Law. Can i get an amen ?!

REPLY: I dont know how proud the term is ; ive never heard a person say they are a Redneck even if they know they are one.... whether it be todays typical and popular stereotype , or if they have redness from working out in fields. But then again, i live in the North (for the time being). Do southern Rednecks say they are one if they are ? Just wondering..
South Carolinian here...
My guess is that the Northern rednecks probably don't refer to themselves as rednecks as much because the term is associated with The South. Personally, I'd rather not call too many people rednecks because certain people think redneck=Southern and vice-versa. Now if someone were to proclaim themselves as a redneck then I would.

If you never heard someone say they are a redneck, then you are missing out on a whole 'nother culture! There is another term which is worn like a badge of honor, mostly in certain backwoods locales and environments...(SE Oklahoma comes to mind), and that is peckerwood.

Redneck originates from the West Virginia coal miners under seige by the government long long ago. They wore red bandanas to signify their defiance; therefore hence the term redneck.

I was told "redneck" was a term originally used for farmers who wore caps and T-shirts in the summer. It was a way to ridicule farmers. (Minnesota version)

I was/am a farmer but I never wore a cap and went bareback in summer all my 63 years.

I guess I'm not a "redneck".
