Where outside of Anniston to live?
I had originally posted my question in the Huntsville section but I will post it here.
If I accept a position in Anniston, I plan on living about 20 miles outside of town in the country. Which direction is best to start looking, east, north, west, south? I have no kids so the schools are not a factor.
Also, what is it I hear about groundwater contamination in Anniston? Makes me leary about moving anywhere near Anniston.

We too will be moving to Anniston, outside about 20 or so miles it appears. Pell City is what we are considering.
My husband and I have done considerable research on the Monsanto contamination and I can get some info to you. I'll find some relevant links and post them.

This is only a smattering of information relevant to Anniston and it's groundwater contamination, I've included info on McClellan too.
Hope this gives you a broad view of what's transpired and what has gone on since to rectify.

I take it you're looking on the west side of Anniston. I looked on the atlas to see where Pell City is located. That's a ways out there almost to Birmingham. I take it that you've driven it? How long does it take you to get there?
Thanks for all the info on the Monsanto issue. When I get some time I'll look at all of it.

Well, we are looking in areas around Anniston, we need things like a garage and ample room, our "want" was to be near water and in searching this seems to be the best we've come up with. He will be at the Army Depot, I'm a banker but would really like to leave that all together and get into non profit. Nevertheless, initially we looked East of the city but didn't find much in the way of larger condo's, town homes. I haven't driven the distance but it's about 30 mins we are calculating. My husband knows the area a bit better than I.

I wondered why you had chosen Pell City. We're looking for at least ten acres. I've been looking at places on the internet with acreage but I'm not familiar with the Anniston area so I really don't know how far the drive will be. In between Anniston and Birmingham might be the way to go for being close to things to do.

Pell City is about a 20 minute drove from Anniston, I would definetly go west, there is nothing to the east except for Atlanta about 110 miles away, Alot of Pell City resident commute to Birmingham, it has a small town feel, and an 18,000 acre lake without the traffic and high home prices. Oohh....doesn't sound like I want to live in the town of Anniston! I might end up glowing!
Back in the mid 90's I used to work at the K25 facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. They produced uranium for the atomic bomb there back in the 40's. Some of the buildings were off limits because of contamination. I saw paperwork on the groundwater contamination on the Oak Ridge Reservation and they were building these $500,000+ houses right down the road. I wouldn't live anywhere near that site after knowing what I know. Thankfully I only worked there a short time and didn't know all this when the temp agency sent me there to work.
