We moved from AL to Florida fifteen or more years ago because that was where I could find employment in my field. Both of us had lived in AL for a number of years and moving was of necessity rather than desire. We enjoy parts of the Florida life, but when those started getting stripped away and my job turned to long term self-employment we decided enough was enough. We'll blend in so well back home that ya'll won't be able to tell we moved away.

I moved here from Bradenton. I moved there from Wisconsin.
Wild horses could not make me live in Wis again. I'm what they call a "halfback"; I moved to FL from WI and now I'm half way back to WI.
Let's see, my taxes on my house was $266 per year until I retired and I now make less than $7500 per year so my property taxes are zero. I paid $200K for my FL house in 1999 and sold it for $450K in 2004, moved here and got 40 acres and a new house for less. Ain't inflation fun?

It is hell down here in Ft. Myers. A very different world than Tampa Bay, but more and more, concerns are being raised on this board about that area as well, and my biggest concern is that perhaps that area is beginning to experience some of the factors that are so prevalent down here that contribute to the poor quality of life in Ft. Myers and surrounding areas.

We moved up here from Punta Gorda, Fl., last July, we are in Slocomb just outside Dothan. It has been total curtural shock and we are having a real hard time with this move. Being on a fixed income and the wife was working in N. Ft. Myers and driving 40 miles every day to work and back, and all the high cost of Taxes and Insurances, I felt a Life Change was in order, but I never figured it would be this bad. We are having problems with the medical system here, one thing we have learned is don't be in any hurry, we are already on our second Family MD and are about to try a third, I need to be looked after because I have two artifical heart valves and a pacemaker and neither of the two seemed to be who I want looking after me, and waiting for 2 hours is not uncommon, we did not have those problems in FL everything is done different here.
We were so used to going out 2 to 3 times a week dancing and having fun, everything here is geared for the yournger set, took us four months to find a place to go danceing that was more geared to what we were used to, and we have to travel 22 miles to get there. I don't miss the traffic down there when the snow birds are in town, in PG is was getting really heavy as well, never liked Ft. Myers and always hated to even think about going there, traffic in Dothan is alway heavy on the weekends and the last place you want to go is Wal-Mart.
Because of my medial conditions I did not want to be any further north than we are, it is taking a lot to get used to this changeing weather, and being on a blood thinner is going to take some gettin used too, we love our new house here, much better than what we had, and cheaper, and since I am on disability no proprety taxes. Liveing here is not easy, one bad thing is we really have no neightbors yet, but soon and then you never know how that is going to work out, makeing friends here is rally hard, it is like we walked into the twilight zone, heard from a lot of people that making new friends is not easy and takes a long time, but we will adjust and hang in here just going to take a long time. Yea we miss it, yea it was a great part of our lives, but the fact remains we can't afford to live there, if it were not the fact that we more or less got lucky and had a buyer for the house, we would still be their and I am not sure what kind of finanical state we would be in.
When we moved to Punta Gorda in 2000 it was really nice and you could not ask for anything better, it was just a great place to live and play, but after Charley in Aug of '04 it is just getting out of hand and control. This is home now, so I guess we just got to make the best out of it.

I am looking to move from Fl to Alabama or TN. I know about Tn.and love the beauty and old timers however that is changing quickly. Tn was my first choice. However I have a friend that has family in Alabama and from what I hear Alabama sounds nice, considering Limestone Alabama area. Can
anyone tell me about the area also about air Pollution( HAVE ASTHMA).also about older homes vs new. I have seen some of the new homes in Tn. being built and it is a crime the way they are building them.

I am an antiques dealer and want to leave my high crime area of Buffalo,NY for somewhere in the south. I am of Jewish descent! I want to move to Dothan,Al., If that offer is still open,as I am married to a Native American Lady. I am a practicing Jewish man,but w/o children. I have a great deal to offer in the arts; as I am a skilled tradesman (operating engineer). Furniture repair, artist, teacher of the arts. But with little fanfare and a slow economy here in Buffalo. Its a tremendous expense to undertake to move without help.I have 36 years in the antiques field.

There is very little air pollution in Alabama. We do have heavy pollen buildup this time of year due to the high number of trees.
Since homes are quite cheap to build, you may get a new house cheaper than you think.
