No, I went east to Cedartown. I have been down AL 9 from Piedmont to Heflin before, though, and it is a scenic drive. I'm going to have to drive U.S. 278 across Alabama again, because it was already twilight when I arrived in Guin (driving eastbound), and dark long before I even got to Cullman.

For deer hunting, I love Sumter County. God, I miss hunting there, especially in January. Great, awesome memories. Wonderful folks.

Despite being an AL native I haven't actually been many places. I do have a few recommendations though.

Lots of people I know like to visit Dauphin Island, which is about a 40-45 minute drive south from Mobile. Mobile also has the USS Alabama Battleship (usually just called "The Battleship") if you're interested in history or nautical things.

For northeastern AL, I remember staying in a chalet somewhere around Fort Payne around September-October a couple of years back. I don't remember the exact name of the campground but it was a wonderful experience. Winter has some snow potential too if you're into that. If I can ever figure out the name I'll be sure to let you know.

One of my absolute favorite places to visit is Priester's Pecans in Fort Deposit, AL (southwest of Montgomery, maybe 35 minutes). Not necessarily a "scenic" location per say but it's a great stop on trips and their pecans are great. Their website is https://www.priesters.com/ if you want more information.
