I'm going to be driving from Charlotte to the MS. line on I-65 in a week or two. Can anyone tell me what this stretch of highway is like? Are there rest stops, 24 gas / food, construction, etc.?

I like to drive at night and I want to be sure amenities are going to be available (and safe).

It's not bad, if a bit dull. Once south of Montgomery, there are really two places to stop: Evergreen and Greenville, both about 50 miles apart. I'm almost certain they'll have all-night gas stations in those places. Also, Fort Deposit has Priester's Pecans, mmmmmmm.

The roads are in good shape, last time I drove it a year ago. It's about 2.5 hours. Not a bad trip at all.

Have to concur with cpg on this one, it's a pretty boring drive. I do remember that the Shell station at Evergreen was a bit more expensive than the station at Greenville, but the last time I made that drive was in 2007, so others may have a better gauge on compartive gas prices. Also, I never stopped at the Evergreen station very late, mostly because if I hit that area at night, I was on my way home to Mobile and had already stopped in Greenville, but that's just the route I was used to traveling; usually I was coming from SE IL. I was thinking there was also a BBQ place along that stretch, but can't quite recall where it was located.

There's the Indian casino near Atmore. It may be 24 hours, but maybe not. You'll miss the stockyards that are right on the interstate in that same area. You'd know where you were by the smell!
But it's gone, now.

It's about a 1:45 to 2 hour drive from Montgomery to Mobile. Made that trip a million times from Mobile going to Auburn games (or the ocassional trip to Atlanta). We always made use of the KFC/Taco Bell combo in Evergreen ... or was it Greenville? Boring drive though.

I agree with everyone else. I just made that drive in Aug. There are a few long stretches where there is nothing and no exits. I did see a few highway patrol on the roads as I got close to Mobile. There are a few rest stops that are very nice. I stopped in Evergreen near the Conecuh sausage plant. I should have gone to their store as it sure smelled good. There are a few fast food places there.

Great posts! I'm going to have an older passenger with me who needs to stop and stretch every once and awhile. So I wanted to get a preview of what I'm in for. Thanks for the replies and information.
