Interracial Dating?
Hey,
I'm a black female and I'm dating a white guy from Alabama. His family seems ok with the idea of him dating a black woman, but other people seem to have other ideas (as they would here in the South - not all, I'm just saying. It's changing alot). I'm going to meet his family sometime next month. I was just wondering, has anyone had to do this? What was your experience like? Any advice? I would really like honest input. Thanks for the responses in advance. God bless.

It's okay to have interracial dating.
I see no point why "other people"have" other ideas".

ducksburg has it about right. If you are going to draw anywhere outside of the lines in the coloring book in an intentional manner, then you have to have the fortitude to stand up to the people who studiously color within the lines and point out that Matisse and the real artists never were stopped by false or restrictive boundries.

Just be yourself and let the rest take care of itself.

Why does it matter what people think? Ultimately you have to be happy. Race is only an issue when you make it an issue...like when you ask questions like this one.

Hope this helps some. First, I agree with what everyone has already said. My husband is white and I am black. We've been married for 9 years. When I first met his parents I was nervous. Although he had black girlfriends in the past, you just never know. All in all his parents were really nice. I love them to pieces. Of course you will have cultural differences, and that's just the way it is. I think it will be easier for you to relate to their culture, than vice versa. Ask your boyfriend about his parents. Their likes and dislikes. That way you don't "mess up" by saying the wrong thing.
The thing I was most shocked about when meeting my husband's family, is that their dog was an indoor dog! Well, where I grew up all the dogs were kept outside. So, I thought it was very strange that the dog had its own futon :0) I'm all for an inside dog, now. I see it no other way.
It's not so much the color of your skin, imo, it's the bridging and melting of two cultures that gets in the way sometimes. We are americans, with a Black history and culture. It takes work to keep both cultures alive in a relationship. Which becomes very important when you have children. Food for thought.
