It is hard for an outsider, unless you have specialized in demand skills, to get into these companies in south AL.
Engineers will also find a good job market in Huntsville. Additionally, lawyers, accountants and others are needed to staff the defense contractors that employ the engineers. (talking about industries in Bama in general)

If you are willing to train a bit more (maybe go through an associates program at a community college) you will prob be able to find a career that you could make a decent living with in Alabama. There are areas of the state with excellent public schools, low crime, and low cost of living. It sounds like you are making a smart move to me.

I'm sorry, but this is total nonsense.

Default Thumbs Up For Alabama

Originally from Michigan, you'll like the weather I think. I haven't lived in Michigan in over 30 years and am from the SW corner. We moved from Kansas to Alabama and I thought Alabama would just be really bad but it wasn't. We had been on a waiting for services for my son who has special needs when we were in Kansas and in SE AL - they didn't have a list. We were lucky because my husband worked for a contractor on the post. Two years ago when we were there it was growing by leaps and bounds. The weather is comfortable and the area had a relaxed atmosphere. Now back in Kansas (we all make mistakes!) we are considering going back to Alabama if we can't get to our first choice, Arizona. It will be a change and so many people have problems with that but if give it two years to get a real feel. You can do a lot worse than Alabama. Good Luck.

Michelle Tucker is on a distinguished road
April: Did you ever make it down this way? I use to live in Jackson - actually in Brooklyn. Pay is cheaper and the cost of living is cheap is well. I believe there is a tire (Michelin) plant somewhere in Midland City near Dothan. There is also the Sony Plant. Several Hospitals and of course Fort Rucker in Enterprise.
