Scottsboro...30 years later?
I met my husband in S'boro in 1976. We were both transplanted there for a short time and I met so many wonderful people. We used to love to go to the lake on weekends and enjoy the views. First Monday was great too. Back then the highway to Huntsville was a 2 lane road. One time in the 80's we stopped there and it seemed that the area was becoming sort of depressed. I would love to hear how things in S'boro are doing. Do the kids still meet at the pig lot and Dairy Queen? How's the job and housing market? Do people actually commute to Huntsville?

Hahaha.. now all the people thinking of moving to this area are going to wonder about the dairy queen being next to the pig lot.
Yes, people do drive to H'ville for work. I just returned to the area and can tell you H'ville has gotten a lot bigger, they even have a downtown now..

Thanks! lol I guess pig lot and dairy queen do sound funny in the same sentence! Just to clear that up for those relocating...The "pig lot" was the Piggly Wiggly grocery store parking lot. In the 70's it was the equivalent of "cruising" the strip in metropolitan areas.

People around here still call Piggly Wiggly the 'Pig' but all I could think of were people who think we are all rednecks here. I haven't been to Scottsboro since I returned to North AL but I have heard it has grown but is still a nice place to live. I left H'ville in 1970 and while it has grown the roadways are designed better than in Tpa Fl. Downtown H'ville has changed the most I think. I remember it being quite small with just a few buildings. I was also surprised when I drove by the houses I use to live in the subdivisions are still nice.

Nice town, it's grown a lot along 72 with lots of new shopping (typical stuff like Lowe's, Home Depot, Walmart, K Mart, Zaxby's and the rest) and a new high school. It's home to the Unclaimed Baggage (dot com) store which has been on the Today Show, etc., countless times. A cool place to browse sometimes.
The downtown is like most small towns, waiting for someone with money and imagination to start the revitalization effort. Given it's proximity to Huntsville and the number of people who now commute there for work (a lot live in Goose Pond Colony on the lake - do a search) and the absolute future growth in Huntsville jobs brought by Base Realignment, I can't imagine Scottsboro's growth slowing anytime soon. With that comes all sorts of opportunity.

Thank you so much, sounds as if S'boro is on the move. I wish I had the $ to invest in the "square" that is the place I fell in love with. And thank you for reminding me of Goose Pond...I couldn't think of the name to save my life. When we lived there there were maybe four restaurants in town. The people are the best!
