What to Alabama people think of Huntsville?
I've read and heard a lot comments such as "Huntsville is different from the rest of Alabama." Supposedly more transplants, more of a melting pot, higher percentage of high tech jobs compared to other Alabama cities. (I don't know these to be facts, just comments made in informal conversations.)
So, for those of you who don't live in Huntsville, what are your thoughts? Does it seem like a "genuine Alabama city"? Do you feel like you're in the "South" when you visit?

I'm not from Alabama, but I can give you my opinion on it. I been to Huntsville , and its pretty much a white and black city, don't have much of a Hispanic and Asian population. Hunstville don't have alot of traffic in what I saw when I was down there. Compare to the rest of Alabama like Birmingham, its way ahead and have less crime, and much safer. Huntsville is also growing( including the population is growing) and it might one day pass Birmingham in population.

I have lived in Alabama all of my life and I have never actually been to Huntsville, only around it on the way to Tennessee.

I personally don't think alot about Huntsville... What's to think about?
It's relatively small. Has a plastic/suburban flavor. It's mostly white.
It has NASA. I've heard it's boring.
It claims to be progressive - I'm not so sure?
I know a few people who graduated from Grissom (one of Huntsville's best high schools) that moved to Birmingham and they like it better in the 'ham.
Incidentally, Huntsville will have to grow exponentially in population and GDP to catch up with Birmingham.
A friendly fact check.
Metro Population
Birmingham-Hoover----------1,108,210
Huntsville------------------------386,632
Metro GPD
Birmingham-Hoover-----------51.5 million
Huntsville----------------------17.1 million

Two reasons the Huntsville forum has twice as many posts as the Birmingham forum: 1) more relocatees and 2) more geeks.

EnvGraph, have you ever visited Huntsville? Driven through? You seem to be making opposite statements.
