Lake Martin Area Retirement
I am retired & wife retires in December. We are both originally from Louisiana but have been in Southern Ohio for 30 plus years. Want to move to warmer climate with lake nearby. Will be looking for new or nearly new house approx 200-235,000. No school children, so schools not a determing factor. Would probably prefer smaller town but within 30-45 minute to larger city. Any info on area around Montgomery, Lake Martin area either pro or con would be appreciated. We could move to Louisiana and live near lake there but grandson is in Atlanta area. Thanks to all for your help

Lake Martin is pretty great. It went through a boom period several years when people started selling off beach properties post-Ivan for a more insurance-friendly place. However, the area has gone through a real estate bust now, and deals are there for the taking.
I'm not an absolute expert on the area, but have some familiarity with it. If you anticipate driving up and down I-85 a lot, then you'll definitely want to be at the southern end of the lake near Stillwater and Deatsville. That area is emerging nicely, so it won't be as if you're on the frontier. You will be a short drive from Auburn/Opelika, which has built up nicely over the past several years, and you'll also be near Alexander City.
Another lake to consider is Logan Martin. That's closer to Birmingham with a lot more amenities near at hand.

You might want to also take a look at Guntersville, Al., Lake Guntersville is huge. We bought our retirement home there and it is a very beautiful area, only 45 minutes to Huntsville and you'd still be like a 2.5 hour drive from Atlanta.

I am also retired and my husband plans to retire this year. We have lakefront property with house custom built in 2000-2001 for sale or lease. 3000 sq ft. (1500 on ground level and 1500 fully finished basement level). It's located on the Atlanta side of beautiful Lake Martin. The view is magnificent and the drive to Auburn is approximately 45 minutes, to Mongomery is 55 minutes, and to Tallassee is 25 minutes. If you are interested in more information I'll be happy to send.
