Cheesh, thanks everyone. I had my settings set to notify me in my email and didnt get a thing, so I didnt know anyone answered. By a nice neighborhood, I mean one that is not crack alley... A nice neighborhood. Schools are not important..just 3 adults moving right now. Ah, the cities you mentioned have all been in my mind, thanks.

I just came across Oakville. What are the demographics of that little town? I cannot find the information.

You can check here for towns/cities in AL. They are sorted by population so if you don't see it, select another option.

I checked and didn't find Oakville, but that doesn't mean it isn't a community not a city. AL has a lot of places that are on maps but they aren't really towns or even cities.

If it is near Decatur, Southlander will know.

At your service!

Oakville is a tiny little settlement just outside Moulton, in Lawrence County. It is famous for being the birthplace of Jesse Owens. Many of his relatives still live there.

Good schools should matter for two reasons:

1) Generally, good schools mean good neighborhoods

2) Good schools will help with the resale value of your home.

It's a very easy commute - maybe 20 miles or a tad less. Mostly 4-lane roads. Oakville has the Jesse Owens Park, a running park that was most recently used for the state high school cross-country meet. An American Indian museum is practically next door. Lots of room to spread out.

Lawrence County is a poor, rural county with probably the poorest schools in North Alabama. But not everybody can or wants to live where the schools are top-rated.

It's the neighborhood that matters. I guess we can look around when we get up that way. Thanks for all the info. I'll let you know where we land.
