Default FEMA Study: Impact of 7.7 Quake in NMSZ

Being from the south, I grew up having only felt one tremor.

Since I've traveled my whole life, I've experienced a few more.

Here's a FEMA study on the impact of a 7.7 quake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, that includes AL, AK, IL, IN, KY, MI, MO and TN.

FEMA: New Study Examines Impact Of 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake On States In New Madrid Seismic Zone

I'm sure we all have better things to worry about, and it's probably OK the feds spend our money thinking about what could happen.

There was a big one in Missouri in 1812 (8.0 and several others) that destroyed the town of New Madrid and was felt back on the east coast, IIRC.

It's just something you don't think about much in this part of the country.

I'm guessing like any other natural disaster, the decentralized parts of the country are resiliant while the urban areas need help just getting out alive.

I got earthquake insurance. It was cheap. Flood insurance though was $400/year. I also got sinkhole insurance.

We occasionally feel tremors here every once in a great while. Nothing that knocks buildings down, though. They have been known to rattle a dish off a shelf.

I remember the quake back in '97 that hit my town. I was only 18 at the time working night shift at a convenience store. I was stocking the cooler when all of a sudden all of the glass bottles started shaking around. It didn't last long and I didn't really realize what it was until it was over.
