we went down and stayed in Fairhope a couple weeks ago (we could not find a hotel room in foley) and we explored mostly all of baldwin county. it is so beautiful down there! As much as i would love to live on the beach in gulf shores, i am not interested in going bankrupt with a condo (hahha) but foley seems wonderful to live in. We are going to begin putting in some job applications and hope we get them! my husband is in health care and I am a paralegal....i have sent some resumes out to some law offices in the area about a month ago to see what i could come up with, but they never replied; im not sure if they would hire me because my degree is in Tennessee.

Don't get too discouraged about the no replies. That is pretty normal. You might want to check out the state employment website https://joblink.alabama.gov/ada/.
I would also call one of the offices and ask them what the opportunities might be like there.
It is a nice area especially out of the city. Hope you checked out Magnolia Springs while you were there. They still deliver mail by boat the last I heard..

jgarrett0218 - sounds like you've decided on Foley. My folks bought a place down there a couple of years ago (near the Riviera Center), and spend Nov-May down there. They use to rent a condo on the Gulf Shores beach, but that ended with hurricane Ivan. They are retired and love the area. I know they've considered moving down there year round. I try to visit them each Feb, and I too think the Foley/Gulf Shores/Fairhope area is quite nice. Hope it all works out for you and you have a successful move.

Compared to a lot of other places in Alabama (especially areas with chicken processing plants), the Hispanic population is quite low. Duncan is right - official counts for the state are WAY off because most of them are illegal. Twenty years ago, Decatur had 1 Mexican restaurant, and it was pretty Americanized. Today, we have 10, and I can't even begin to count the tiendas - Latin grocery-variety stores. One opens every week.

I would rather live in Gulf Shores (if you can afford the real estate and insurance). I am a 5th generation of Foley and I moved to Elberta. Foley is not a terrible place, it's just not as nice as it use to be. Robertsdale, Silverhill, even the Eastern Shore is nice to raise a family. Elberta is great too. The schools are really nice. All of my children went to Elberta and you could not ask for a better group of people. Foley Schools have gone down hill in the past few years. Gulf Shores would be nice to live or any small town around Foley.

My sister lives in Summerdale near Fish River, it is a nice area. I really liked Silverhill area too. Far enough away from the beach but not too far.

The Mexican restaurants are great here. I don't see how that reflects upon the Mexican population because the majority of people eating in the two that I frequent are Caucasion. You never see a ton of Mexican's in our Mexican restaurants unless they own it or work at it. True Mexican food is much different than what is served at the food service establishments.
Gulf Shores High School was found to have the highest drug testing results in the county. Gulf Shores is probably the least differse school in the county.
Honestly, all cities in Baldwin county are beautiful. I have never in all my travels found such a large county of very nice cities. Every city has their problems. Foley has some issues. It is not the quaint little leave your door unlocked community it once was. I just hate when the problems are exaggerated. It is still a far cry from many areas of the US.

FoleyPhoto,
We have decided on Foley to begin with, we are currently looking into places to rent that will allow cats! (we have one). Also, we are looking into employment but that has turned up not so good yet! Anyway, we still have hope that it will get better
