Daphne, Alabama
I was wondering about Daphne Alabama..when hurricanes hit the Gulf of Mexico, does Daphne usually get hit pretty hard? Also, I have seen the crime stats for Daphne, but what are the more affordable areas to live in Daphne, and which ones should I avoid? Any help would be great!!

Tornados and hurricans are a force of nature you only predict to a certain point. You cannot say A or B will be hit this season.

This should give you a number of links to tracking and historic numbers.

To all who lives in Alabama and have family there....... I give my words of prayer to you and your love ones, to keep your town strong through this diaster, and bring each and everyone together safely. May the ones who have lost love ones, find comfort in the family and friends.

Freedom - thank you. It got a bit intense yesterday. Along the line of purse packed, cat carrier ready in the truck.
Everybody in my neigborhood is ok. Trees down ... No big deal :>)

Daphne is inland 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.
The power lines are above the ground so you might go for a few days without power in 100+ heat but thats abuot it.Now if you live in a mobile home ...that's a different story.
If you must live in Al. you really cannot go wrong with anywhere in Daphne.

unless you are right on the water, hurricanes don't really change the way of live near the coast.
every once in a while yes you will take a direct hit and sustain some damage (trees down, maybe some roof damage, etc.) but the last time this really happened in mobile was katrina... and before that the last real trouble maker was frederic back in 1979 i believe.
it is the rise in water that causes 90% or more of the damage with hurricanes, not the wind, so if you are more than a mile from the water, or higher than 20 feet from sea level, i wouldn't worry too much about it.
daphne, fairhope, gulf shores, and foley are all nice places to live in my opinion (foley maybe not quite as nice, but by far the cheapest, and growing).
also, all of these cities, even gulf shores, have areas that were not devatstated by ivan or other hurricanes... you just need to be a little off the water.

Daphne, thoughts please
I would also like to hear more about Daphne. We plan on returning to Alabama in the summer of 2008 and though I have already researched Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile, I would like to know more about Daphne. Schools are not an issue as my youngest graduates prior to the move. I currently live in DC so I am used to rough commutes so if there are traffic issues, hopefully it won't be much of a shock. Any thoughts ya'll may have on the lifestyle in or around the Daphne area is most appreciated.

I agree with Steve regarding Daphne. Nice place to live. You might want to check out Forest Lakes. When I was looking for a place a little over a year ago I found several reasonable houses. I think they are also building new ones in that area now too.
Can't tell you if rush hour is worse than DC but it is heavy.
