What amazes me, is that this question has to be asked in the first place.
I case you haven't guessed, I don't live in Alabama. I have heard that Alabama is still very racist but I didn't believe it. I can't imagine anyone asking that question in say Ohio.
How about the Dekalb County area, Ft. Payne, Collinsville. There isn't much of a racial mix in that area. Is there a reason for that?

Not sure what you are getting at PeteD, but I will take a wild guess that you aren't in an interracial relationship and aren't of a minority race either? People want to feel like they will be accepted and although they may love their significant other and their friends and families accept their situation, there are plenty that do NOT. So, to pose the questions is to gain an idea of what people will be like in response to them moving in. No one wants to live somewhere that is uncomfortable, and they obviously aren't going to change their lifestyles for ANYONE. It's simply get an idea if this is a place they should consider or not. Let me tell you, I know first hand how people can stare and make comments. It's outrageous to me but everyone is entitled to their opinions. I believe my family is the most beautiful one around, but not everyone would agree and that's fine. Im sure as heck not moving to their neighborhood though. It does happen everywhere I hate to say, even Ohio! Florida, and very liberal areas of California. There are always going to be IDIOTS!!!

Any information about the response to interracial relationships in montgomery. I am African-American and my boyfriend is white. Will we find that people are generally accepting? Is it better for us to go look for apartments separately or together.

jdw123--Don't we have enough problems in this Country right now without you talking the way you do? Don't you know that the Oriental race does like to keep within their own culture? I am white and I am ashamed of people that talk the way you do.

"Oriental" Is NOT a race! The politically correct term for someone of Asian decent is "Asian". They do not like to be referred to as "Oriental". just want to let you know in case you didn't realize that.

An Asian explained this to me one time. The word Oriental is used to refer to
objects like rugs or vases. Asian refers to people.

race in North Alabama
In the area of North Alabama between the Tennessee river and Birmingham including the Fort Payne/DeKalb county area there was very little if any slavery. The land was not naturally fertile and therefore not suitable for large plantation crops such as cotton. As a result, this area today is almost entirely white. It's original inhabitants were poor white subsistance farmers. The vast majority of the people there now are thier decendants.
These rural areas as well as the more diverse rural areas to the south are still very conservative especially when it comes to race. This is not to say that the entire state is this way. I live in Tuscaloosa (home of the University of Alabama) and while there are plenty of bigots here, there are also many interracial couples and many intergrated neighborhoods. Maybe it's just us, but it seems that probably at least half of the closest friends of my wife and I are african american or others in relationships with african american partners.
This also seems to be the case in the Birmingham and Huntsville areas. I haven't spent much time in Montgomery but I have to say that I haven't heard many good things about it.
