Oh, there is still some here. But I would offer not as much as you would find in the midwest or northern industrial cities. When I moved here from Chicago, I'm not sure what I was expecting, but we were gratified to find that there weren't cross burnings, racial slurs, race riots, lynchings, or any of that stuff here. To be sure, every once in a while, some old mossback would put forth an uncomfortable opinion, but I've decided that really doesn't really reflect the opinions by-and-large of a city such as Birmingham. In fact, I heard the n-word said more time around my Uncle's Thanksgiving table in Cleveland than I've heard in 15 years in Alabama.

Hey, it's not paradise. People are not singing Kumbaya. But that's not the case in any other American city either. Here, blacks and whites work together, eat lunch together, go to school together, and often socialize together just like any other city. So I think Birmingham is a nice model of a place where efforts to improve race relations have been steadily achieving results for a long time.

I expect that if you look for racism in Alabama, you can find it. I also expect that if you look for racism in all the other states you will also find it. But if it happens in Alabama , Mississippi, etc. it always makes the headlines more than if it happens in the proclaimed NON RACIST states. Thats just the way it is. I believe its all based on preconceptons.

If you want to find racism, go to California. Even in a metropolitan city such as LA/OC, some cities are clearly minority neighborhood, some as clear cut as across one street.

There is some racism in Alabama but it's nothing like the "old south" that you see on TV, it goes both ways now. You're just as likely to experience racism as a white person as you would be as a black person.

There is an observation on the Georgia thread on racism in Georgia by jeffmurdoch.

I know not if it is accurate about Georgia, I know not if his observation would hold true about Alabama.

He also alluded to "racism" being a two way street.

Racism is still present, but is dying out. Literally, no pun intended. The younger generations especially are much less apt to judge someone on the basis of skin tone than older people (I'm not saying all older people are racist at all.) Also, from what I've observed while growing up and going to college in the south, racism tends to be more of an issue in the communities located in more rural areas and/or in the communities with lower education rates. In larger towns and cities when you are associating with educated people, it's pretty rare or at least it's not an accepted mindset.

There are of course exceptions to everything, but based upon my observations that is what I've found to be true in general.
