The $4,000 assessed figure is in the Alabama Code. Counties are also authorized to toss in a few $$$ of exemption on their own. Oh, as near as I can tell, Sylacauga's millage is approximately 50.5 mills...those folks don't have a very good website...or maybe I just can't find it?

MarySally - we cannot save AL singlehandedly. I got confused with the seniors and then the young families.

Shelby County covers part of Hoover/Birmingham. Mostly nice neighborhoods.

I cannot picture anyone considering a house for 3k tax in Sylacauga. Must have been the Courthouse :>)

Ummm... I'm NOT talking about Money magazine and this is not some subjective "feel good" list that you sometimes see in publications. We're talking *facts* here. The article, dated 2/13/2007, is from the Microsoft Network (MSN). MSN Money typically has accurate and useful advice.

Did the poster not also complain about some plant in Dothan, AL? He/she may not yet have discovered the issues in Anniston :>(((

What business does Aiken have in AL?

Seniors under a certain income level get an additional exemption. My mother is 84 and still has to pay property taxes. She makes too much money for a total exemption. Sales taxes are different depending on where you are. In Decatur, it's 9 per cent: 4 per cent to the state, so much to the county, so much to the city. Outside Decatur, it's different (8 per cent, I think). Sales taxes on everything - including food and drugs - except cars. You pay that when you buy your license tag. We have a VERY low income tax. Don't like property taxes? Don't move to Alabama.

Sales tax rate in Huntsville is 8% but outside city limits in Madison County it is only 5.5%. If it really bothers you that much, I guess you could just shop in county.

You certainly aren't sure.
I am asking what the property tax exemption amount is.
Is the property tax exemption $4,000 of the assessed tax value in every county of Alabama? Now I have heard 3 different things, $4,000, $15,000 & one half of the rental house rate.
Your house & your taxes are determined by your neighborhood house values.
A 2,000 sq ft heated area house varies in its value because of its neighborhood. Your tax bill does not answer my question.
I just want the facts in the courthouse books.
An 8% sales tax is the same on towels as it is on shoes in AL.
I wanted to know the real homestead tax exemptions, if any, & if they are uniform all over the state. Simple.
Thanks & may God bless you!

You mean the chemical weapons burning in AL? ha ha! You should know what I know, but really, it is not funny! You mean the PCB's? Monsanto sold out to Solutia to prevent losing a lot of lawsuit money over that one.
