other issues besides the obvious?
I know about Monsanto, and the chemical weapons dump etc.
I also know there are toxic areas all over our great country. What does one suppose the water and soil quality is as well as long term affects?
I know I came from up north where we had many plutonium "holding" areas, and undetermined areas of Multiple Sclerosis clusters. EPA couldn't "find" any explanation at all. It is scary but I believe it's everywhere and the powers that be allow it.

It is not everywhere, Clark, but some of it is naturally occurring in the soil, but it is very, very low level in the USA naturally.
People should be more concerned with the environment, & with their dollars & where they go.
Money should not go into the deep pockets of politicians & their friends they get business for. It should not go to people who are rewarded by having children in sin.
I asked people in person in AL about the economy because I wanted to know how it would effect MY life. Some told me about how the state took away their grandchildren & they still claim them as dependants on their tax forms. Oh, I heard lots of stuff about personal lives that I did not know & was not interested in knowing. The physical environment, I know all about.
Take care & may God bless & protect you & me too.

Okay, Normajo, a house on my street sold (and closed) last week for $299K. My house is not as large, so i think a conservative value would probably be $200K. My recollection is that the value on the tax statement was $155K. I'm not sure if that was appraised value or assessed value and don't know (or really care) what the homestead exemption is since I know that my property tax for last year was $707. Having owned many houses in my lifetime in TX, LA, and AL I know that $707 is very low for a $200K house.

I thank twostep because now I know the exemption for me would be only $4,000 in AL.
A $200,000 home would be taxed at about $500 where I live, with the senior exemption that my husband would be entitled to receive.
Thanks for the info. I am sure you have a lovely home in beautiful AL!

Ha Ha Ha Augusta, GA is the cheapest place to buy a house, house prices only considered.
With all the congestion & pollution, Augusta is directly south of the Savannah River Site, the nation's atomic bomb producers & nuke reprocessors & right below the nuclear dumping ground, Barnwell, SC, down river & downwind.
Money isn't everything, you know - ha ha!
I clip coupons, but I give many of the groceries I buy with them to the local soup kitchen.
From now on, I'll stick to the point of city demographics.
Have a blessed evening!

Normajo - you sound like a rather unhappy person. Smile! I clip coupons, recycle presents and process deer if necessary :>)
We had a great time in Anniston, AL, I would love to return to DC, Columbus, GA was worth a repeat, Huntsville, AL a bit too short to get to know everything (you forgot to complain about Redstone!), Tacoma, WA was a bit damp but otherwise perfect. Ever heard about Potash, AL?
So far Birmingham, AL hit the spot. Expensive, dirty, dangerous, mergers, foreigners, mixed couples, polution, traffic jams - still a great city to settle down, enjoy life and raise a family.
Try google.com. Yes, I will gladly coach you through extensive internet research (cutting up aside - the offer stands, via pm if you choose so) as long as you quit turning pennies into copperwire. By the way - it is against the law to use current tender for any purpose but the intended one.
Did you know that you can sign on at Lowes, request the monthly newsletter and receive a 10% off 10k purchase if you mention that you plan to move or just moved? That is what I call a coupon.
Pax! See you tomorrow. I have to feed the ladies of the neighborhood cheap frozen pizza and good wine. Stitch 'n ***** or exchange of absolutely necessary information for a couple of hours.

Thanks for the offer!
Do you know of any website address that tells the homestead exemptions for each county in Alabama?
That would be immensely helpful.
Unhappy? Well, I have made a number of people quite happy & that gives me deep satisfaction.
I consider myself a serious, conscientious person, I am very interested in Alabama, if you haven't noticed that by now.
Thanks for any more help you might give me.
Have a blessed evening.
