Smile Some questions about moving

Hi everyone, I currently live in NY and I hate it. Everyone is mean and it gets way too cold in the winter here.

I am currently in school but I will be done by next fall. I would like to move to alabama because of warm weather, nice people, cheaper cost of living, lots of open space, ect.

I dont have kids, just me and my gf, and I would like to live near a small town but far enough away that i can have some privacy.

How much is land going for in Alabama currently??

I am an aircraft mechanic so I will have to live somewhere near an airport but I dont mind driving.

I am also an automotive mechanic so if I cant find an aviation job right away i can always fall back on that.

I Love offroading as well as being an outdoorsman (hunting, fishing, ect.)

I know some people stereotype northerners and call them yanks among other things but to be honest I hate people from here more than alot of southerners do.
I live here and have to put up with it everyday and cant stand it.

I wanna just move down south and relax, no more rushing and no more mean nasty people.

So where would a good place to look into be??

The Huntsville area is a "smaller city", with lots of wide open space within a close proximity. We do have a small airport, Redstone Arsenol is BIG...We have lakes AND mountains. You could probably find a home with couple of acres for under $150,000 out in the county. My brother lives on Long Island

The one thing to remember is that the pay in AL is not going to be like what you would make in NY, however COL is much less here. There are big and small airports located all over AL.

You can chose N or S AL and still have hunting and fishing. In S. AL you have the gulf and bay for fishing, in N. AL you have huge lakes (like Guntersville Lake) and streams/rivers where they catch big mouth bass.

N. AL is mountainous and has lots of rural areas, S. Al is flatter but the area around Mobile is building up quickly due to the new steel plant. Property is a little more expensive around Mobile.

We have a CD member who lives in N. AL from LI and they love it here.

I was born and raised on Long Island so I can relate. I was also an aircraft mech nyself, for 22 years with the Marine Corps, prior to becoming a Realtor.

The cost of a home with land will greatly depend on where you you choose to live.

In the Greater Birmingham area, you can get 2.5 acres with a fixer-uper for under $20K all the way up to a few Mil.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Thats cool, how did you choose alabama over the other states??? I would like something more like 10 acres with a fixer-upper. I am planning on taking a trip down there and see for my self what its like and visiting the various towns and maybe talk to some real estate people about land.

Just to give you an idea, I sold a property last year..definately a fixer... 7 acres, pond, stables, fenced, with a 2800ft house for $170000 just 5 minutes outside of Athens.
Land in Limestone County is going to be much more affordable. Also, just over the Tennessee line is a great place to look for affordable land.
In Huntsville and Madison County, you will pay a good bit for 10 acres. With a property on it, you will start in the mid $200s and then the sky is the limit. Land is a huge commodity in the Hville area!

You can also look in Marshall or Jackson County, prices are lower because they are farther away from Huntsville.

If you want S. AL check out Baldwin County around Stapleton, Bay Minette, Silverhill or Summerdale.

Morgan County is not that far from the Huntsville airport, and land is even cheaper on this side of the river.
And if you don't mind the drive, check out Lawrence County, too. Cheaper still, with plenty of fix-ups.
