Let me assure you, TakeAhike's head is in the Right place.
If you are offended I wish you well anyway. 'What evil lurks in the heart of man?'--that's from an old radio show--Dark Shadows, possibly.
It's a joke--Atlanta's suburbs encroach upon bordering states--we LOL goodnaturedly about that. Some of us at least.
'Sweet Home Alabama'--maybe not so true? From this encounter.

I'm not offended...I just didn't understand what you meant. Guess I don't hang around in the Atlanta forum enough.

I think the real questions is, what accent is more disgusting. The deep south, or Minnesota, where I'm from

LOL--I like the Minnesota accent.
I can decipher most regional accents--'Somehow'--not certain I would do well in Scotland.
I like the Aussie accent the best. Would love to visit OZ. mmm--Hugh Jackman.

Just to put in a Sandlapper's two cents into this...
I dont think the 'Bama accent is going anywhere. I see some of ya'll around my neck of the woods and Ive heard the accent loud and clear from each individual Ive met.

Here in Birmingham, it is very much so dependent on where you go. In the city, most people don't have much of a Southern-accent, as well as most of the southern suburbs(Homewood, Mountain Brook, Hoover,280, and Pelham. When you go to areas such as Alabster(portions of it), Trussville, Moody/Leeds, the accent is kind of mixed. Now, when you go to the areas North to the Western side of the city, the southern accent is very noticeable. Obviously the further away from the city you get, the more it is prevalent. I have lived a south of the city(a little) for all of my life before moving into the city, and my friends and I have never had much of a southern accent. Being that we are from the south however, somethings come out southern. Like I said, it is dependent on where you go, but in the area as a whole, the accent is decreasing if you ask me but it is still hear.

I don't think that is ever going to happen. I'm only 21 and I'm amazed at how southern I can sound sometimes. I mean granted that I have the accent sometime I catch myself saying ye or instead of tired tored (long o sound). I blame my grandmother for some of it. Sometimes it sounds like i chew on the words before I speak them if I speak them at all. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
