What makes South Carolina's population grow at faster rates than Alabama's?
Location, mainly. Pretty much all the south/mid-Atlantic states have a lot of recognition.

Aside flying to New Orleans for Mardi Gras , a lot of people elsewhere aren't really that familiar with AL-MS-LA-AR, other than the occasional half-century-old footage of Civil Rights stuff in Birmingham that gets rehashed every year on the history channel.

yes

One reason being that South Carolina promotes itself more regarding being a retirement destination than Alabama does.

Alabama is starting to do that alot, especially in the Huntsville area and the Mobile-Baldwin areas.

I think that Alabama will stay ahead of South Carolina. Alabama is about to experience a boom in growth from the steel plant, base realignment and closures, the auto industry, and others.

I doubt it.. N and S Carolina are known as half-back states. There are more NY'ers and FLoridians in N. Carolina mainly because of the type of employers. AL is not a big financial state. The jobs in H'ville are gov't jobs that are highly specialized. In Mobile the new steel plant may bring in ppl from other states but you also have to consider the economy.

AL doesn't promote itself as a retirement state.

I agree with Keeper. The number of businesses and retirees from the Norteast states seem to congregate in the Southeast states such as the Carolinas and Florida, however I feel the smarter businesses and retirees choose Alabama, mainly because the tax burden isn't as high and it's not as quickly becoming as congested.

So it's half and half. I still think that Alabama will stay ahead of SC.
