Opelika is growing like crazy. You will not regret moving here, if thats what you end up doing.
Besides TigerTown, which is a large outdoor shopping center with stores like; oldnavy, homedepot, target, bestbuy, olive garden, and so many others, the city just approved contruction of a competing shopping center half a mile down the street. I think they have named it "shops at kapps farm"? Weird name, but whatever.
Anyway, it will be about 400,000 sq. ft of retail space including, movie theater, out door amphitheater, circuit city, kohls, and approximately 2,600 parkign spaces, 3 hotels, and a ton of other stores.
neighbourhoods are popping up everywhere geared toward the middle class family. Brand new contruction starting in the $170,000 range.
the city also approved contruction for one of the largest sports complex in Alabama. will be located off Anderson road in Opelika. It will include soccer fields, swimming pools, baseball fields, indoor gymnasium, etc. She be open in '09.

no i am not a city official. Just excited about what the city is offering in the coming years.

just spent 4 years at auburn. there are a handful of good restaurants to pick from (but not a lot).

as mentioned, niffer's is good...
brick oven pizza is great on monday night ($6 all you can eat pasta AND $1 beers)
amsterdam cafe is a good casual lunch spot and also moderately upscale dinner place

the two most expensive restaurants in auburn are hamilton's and auburn city limits. both are very good.

auburn/opelika is rapidly expanding. around the campus there are tons of old buildings and homes being torn down to build condo highrises. my brother-in-law works for a construction firm, and their business has almost doubled in the last few years.
i also heard that they will be building another large shopping center not far from tiger town
