I guess it depends on the person but I moved to N. AL for several reasons, family being one and being born and raised in AL I wanted to move back home.

Tampa is a great place to live and I liked living there for 30 years. Nalabama is right, Tampa has changed a lot over the years.

Plus a lot of other good reasons...many of which are the same reasons people move from Alabama to Florida.

Well hopefully the folks from Florida dont take over and ruin Alabama like they have with the northern parts of Georgia and Western North Carolina and lots of Tennessee.

Calera, Al is about 20 miles south of Birmingham. They are building a Publix here, to open in 2010. There is plenty of homes and land to go around. A few miles south is Wilsonville, lots of folks there with horses and farms. Prices are very reasonable.

I live one mile from the FL state line, it's amazing I can walk a mile down the road and the property taxes and insurance all of a sudden double (sometimes triple). The fees, regulations, and inspections are also ridiculous, a permit for this, and a permit for that.

I would suggest somewhere between Montgomery and Auburn. Montgomery has a Publix and I'm fairly certain Auburn is in the process of getting two Publix stores.

We would like something around $150k-$175k. Preferably with at least 2-3 acres that I can have a horse on.
We want to buy.
Not married yet. No kids and not likely to have any in the future.

We would be willing to just purchase the land and build the house on it. It might actually end up being easier that way.
I saw 3 arces for sell for around $18k just the other day...for the money you want to spend, you can have a decked out mobile home for that kind of money, if you are into that...i love mobile homes, some of the nicer ones can look really nice inside...and the property I mentioned is in bessmer al, right next to the interstate...you really can not ask for better then that...property is fairly cheap in Alabama if you take the time to look around...

I believe there's a new Publix in Opelika/Auburn area. Plenty of acreage in surrounding areas.

My boyfriend is already living in Alabama so when I got back up to meet him we'll look around. He wants to move to the Jacksonville, AL area but I do like to see if anyone else had some opinions as well. I've actually found a house thats in our price range that I absolutely love except for the fact that you have all the land and its not zoned for agricultural. A waste imo since I'm dead set on getting a horse.

And yes, Florida has going straight into the can and its not going to get any better. Crime is rediculous. I took my step mom down to the Petco in Orlando and had 2 different homeless people beg for money. The state is getting run down. Orange groves are going to be next to non-existent due to the mass of housing developments going up.

I prefer a bit of nature without having to pay a fortune for it.

Anyway, here was the house I was talking about. Really nice eh? If it weren't for the land zoning I would probably make an offer for it!
