Everything here is so familiar. But I haven't seen this one yet: "Let me tell you how the cow eats the cabbage." Or is this only a Texas expression?
Hmm...Never heard that one. It may really be a Texas thing. (Thang.)

I went shopping for a Mother's Day card today, every one of them said "Mom". When will these card companies figure out that few southerners say "Mom", most of us say "Mama".

The one saying that makes me feel at home from the Carolinas to Texas is "What can I do fer ye."

ABSOLUTELY! When I first became a mother, I expected that I'd be "Mama". but somehow my husband--a former Marine* who has lived all over the place--managed to train my boys to call me "Mommy", which is...well, what Yankees say.

*--If indeed there IS such a thing as a "former Marine".

No it's not! I called my mother "Mommy" until I was about 45, and I think most of my friends called theirs "Mommy." She called hers "Mama," though. She was raised (not reared) in the NC mountains.

I guess I might can understand Mommy for a child, bacause it sounds somewhat similar to Mama. I never hear anyone say Mom though, unless they're trying to sound like fake yankee.
