Being born and raised in Alabama....I have a few that I'm still quilty of saying.
Fit to be tied = angry, uppity = conceited, piddlin' = wasting time, reckon = to think, a hankering = a desire & lickety split = quick. Yep, we do sound funny sometimes. I lived a year & a half in Chicago....when I'd go into a store to ask for something, you'd see people peeking around the corners when they heard me speak.....I thought it was funny......but made my sister-in-law(who was also from AL) mad!

Fixin'
One thing we southerners always say that I never gave a thought to is 'fixing'..Like I'm fixing to go to the store....we're fixing to total this all up in a minute.....he's fixing to find out who she is. Does anyone say that up north? My country inlaws always say 'mess' when talking about food...... I'll have a mess if turnips.... We have just enough beans in the garden for a mess....and of course the most famous southern statement....YA'LL! I'm a true GRITS, so ask if you have any questions! (Girl Raised In The South)

I know the typicals from my southern grandparents, "yuns" a "switching" when your bad, "yonder" etc. The biggest one to adjust to is "bless your heart" this seems that it can be used as sympathy or a sucks to be you term.
Just thought it would be fun to lighten up the message board and hear from locals as well as transplants.
Have a great day!

I'm a transplant too! I had trouble grasping the names of places, like Wedowee and Dearmanville.

up north, we don't say "fixin"
we might say "I'm going to", or "I'm gonna"
and instead of "y'all", its more often "you guys"
