Default Region names

Hey everyone. So, we talk a lot about cities in Alabama, mostly about developments and trying to convince people to move there, but we don't talk too much about area nicknames.

I know there are some cities that have nicknames that aren't well known. Or some region names that are developing as a general reference name like "NoVa" or "NOLa" or "The Hampton Roads" or for a local example "Tennessee Valley (for Huntsville-Decatur)" or "The Bay Area" or "The Wiregrass" or "The Shoals".

I've always wondered what some names for places like Gadsden, Anniston, Albertville, Tuscaloosa?

Well, that whole Albertville/Boaz/Guntersville area is called "Sand Mountain." Tuscaloosa is "The Capstone." Down through Bibb, Marengo, Wilcox, Dallas Counties you've got the "Black Belt" named for the dark, fertile soil. The Shoals area is also called the "Quad Cities."

I have no idea if there is a name for the Gadsden or Anniston areas.

Gadsden and Anniston are part of the Piedmont, are they not?

I know South Alabama around Dothan is the Wiregrass.

Northwest Alabama is the Shoals area.

Black Belt has been mentioned already, as has the Tennessee Valley.

"The Capstone" refers to the University of Alabama, not the city. I don't recall the Tuscaloosa area having a nickname except for maybe "West Alabama," which isn't very specific.

Yea, I mean, the city itself is known as "The Druid City", but West Alabama seems to be the only regional name for the area. Still, it doesn't really carry the cultural significance of the area like some other names.

Because of the many oak trees in the city make it resemble a Druid forest.
