Grad student in Auburn, AL
I need help!!! I'll be moving to Auburn in the fall and was hoping for some advise on where to live, how to get around, what to do (from a big city - I'm used to having lots to do), and insider tips on how to survive!! (for example, the great hole-in-the-wall places to eat, shop, etc).
I welcome any and all advice!!!
for housing, I'm willing to pay around 500(??), roommate(s), a sensible living environment (i'm over the party scene, but I do have my own personal jam sessions for my own sanity )
Thanks in advance!!!!!!

At one point, Auburn led all universities nationally in the percentage of students living in "manufactured housing," otherwise known as "trailers."
Ride a sheep, ride a tractor, or if you're close enough, just roll your trailer.

what to do (from a big city - I'm used to having lots to do)

Auburn's most famous activity involves throwing toilet paper in a tree.
No, that is not a joke either. They use the old one-ply, then throw it in the town's designated tree. This is not a random activity of a few hooligans, but a sanctioned event included in university orientation sessions. Seriously.

If you hear people on Wire Rd squealing like a pig, and commenting on your "purty mouth," then RUN !!!

OK, I'm a University of Alabama alumna, but I put a child through college at Auburn just a few years ago so I can answer some of your questions.
Transit: The campus has a bus system and it does run into some of the town. But if you're studying late on campus, be aware that is shuts down around, I think, 10 or 11 p.m. Son lived in an apartment complex on the north side of town. He could ride the bus but had to walk a couple of blocks to catch it.
You're from the big city? Congrats. Now you get to experience small town life. One one hand, there's not much shopping. ON the other hand, there are some really neat little local shops you won't find anywhere else.
Some fave places to eat: Niffer's. Mama Goldberg's. The drugstore at Toomer's Corner for the lemonade, but not too often - it's expensive. I'm sure there are plenty of others that have popped up since the son graduated!
Can't help you on housing specifics, but you can pay as much as you want. There are fancy apartment complexes with pools and volleyball courts and grills and workout rooms, and yes, trailer parks out on Wire Road...as well as grungy apartment complexes and even a couple of "private dorms." On campus housing is limited...the university cannot even accommodate its entire freshman class. So nail down housing now. Check Craig's List.
Good luck, and enjoy your time at Auburn. It's a very good school. I look forward to us kicking your butt in football again this year, LOL and ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

As said above... Mama G's for food and Toomer's for the lemonade. Cheeburger Cheeburger and Mellow Mushroom downtown are also great. I'm not a big Niffers fan. For fancier resturaunts... Ariccia by the university or Provinos on the way to Tiger Town.
If you go to bars I suggest War Eagle Supper Club and In Italy... if you're over 21. Avoid Sky Bar and Highlands/Pulse... for safety reasons and for your own sanity.
Avoid Wire Road and the trailers. =) There are many student housing apartments(NOT the dorms) that have nice amenities. Try Auburn Trails, The Reserve, University Village. or just go here: Apartments in Auburn, Alabama or check out craigslist. Most of these apartments are also on the Tiger Transit route as well... and it's decent. but you may want to invest in a bike.
Downtown has good shopping, especially the boutiques. Other than that there's Tiger Town in Opelika and the mall. If you want better shopping you'll have to go to Columbus, GA or Atlanta.
Have fun! and yeah... ROLL TIDE!

Auburn has an excellent transit system for students (Tiger Transit). Because parking space is so limited around campus, most student take advantage of the transit system to and from classes. If you're looking for anything else, it's non-existant.
Auburn is a great little town. Although there are some local watering holes, most of the college kids seem to just enjoy "hanging" out with their friends and such. It's a pretty laid back atmosphere.
Hope you enjoy your time at Auburn. I know my daughters certainly did -- and in fact, still lives in the area.

GOOD stuff. I think I'll be moving to a place called Village West Apts on Richland Rd. Anyone know about this area? Or the apartments?
