Default Gadsden Area - Looking for updated information

Hi Everyone,

My mother is looking to move to Gadsden for retirement so to live in a smaller southern town. (she lives in Huntsville, AL now). She is looking in the Rainbow and Southside areas. She wants a small southern town, something Huntsville was say 20 years ago before the BRAC and arsenal expansions.

I searched the Alabama forum and seems to be older remarks concerning Gadsden. I was hoping to get more updated information of the city.

1- I read the economy is slow there, but I noticed on MLS there are several new and existing nice moderately priced homes. Wondering, what type of work professionals live in the area to purchase these homes? What is the main source of employment? Are these locals or people moving in retiring?

The concern is the ability to resale the house if needed to etc.

2- What is the population mix in the area. I did check the city data info, but would like to hear from someone who lives there on real population mix and crime etc.

3- Concerned about a few chicken plants that I found on the internet for the area. Is there any type of Hispanic pollution issue due to the chicken plants? Any concerns with Albertville issues overflowing to Gadsden etc.?

4- Is Gadsden pushing or attempting to get any type of particular industrial into the area? As in, more chicken plants, manufacturing etc?
I did read they are attempting to get a large Bingo center there, but not sure if this depends on state law passing?

5- How is the retail shops holding up right now? Are there large number of retailers closing up etc?

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

Is there any type of Hispanic pollution issue due to the chicken plants?

I am familiar with avian flu and swine flu. Is there something new I may not yet have heard about called Hispanic pollution which may be related to chicken plants?
